Having recently reviewed and enjoyed 'TeaPigs Organic Honey Bush and Rooibos Tea', I decided to check out another of the TeaPigs products - this time the 'Chai' variety.
For those of you unfamiliar with the TeaPigs brand, the company uses whole leaf tea only - meaning that the powdery substance found in your 'normal' everyday brew isn't present. Also, instead of using regular teabags, TeaPigs use biodegradable 'Tea Temples', which are silk containers designed to allow the tea-leaves space to infuse properly - very posh indeed.
Chai tea is basically Assam with added spices and cinnamon flavour. Most spicy and exotic teas require no milk - yet chai is best drunk with a splash of the white stuff (milk that is..) in order to achieve the correct flavour. Also, the tea needs to be brewed for a full three minutes with freshly boiled water to get the best taste.

Aroma & Taste

Whilst brewing, a wonderful spicy aroma is released. The flavour is quite complex, with the secondary taste (after the assam) being the cinnamon. You can pick up elements of ginger in the aftertaste, although it wouldn't be that apparently unless someone had made a point of telling you it was in the ingredients. The tea has a slight natural sweetness, but many people like to accentuate this by adding a touch of honey. Personally, I like it as it comes, and am happy with just the milk.
In terms of its price, TeaPigs tea is quite expensive, and the 15 Tea Temple pack comes to £3.99 which is indeed quite a lot. That said, the Tea Temples are extremely well made - more like an art form than a tea bag, and the packaging is well designed and pretty to look at.

All in all, TeaPigs Chai is a very tasty brew which has had a lot of care put into its production. Not only can you purchase it for yourself as a warming winter drink, but it would also make a nice gift for someone, especially if it was part of a selection pack. Highly recommended.
