I treated myself to a box of these from our local farmshop (ignoring the price tag) and wasn't disappointed. The individual tea portions come in silky little bags (hence the cost maybe) and after swirling then around in water, the smell is delicious. You are immediately treated to a heady aroma of honey and then the subtlety of Rooibos. These flavours work so well together and are really good for the immune system. If you really must you could add a little extra honey (quite good if you have a sore throat), but really the taste is lovely and delicate as it is. I tend to let my bag infuse for about 5 minutes and then drink the tea when it has cooled just slightly. It tastes so healthy and actually quite velvety too. I have a friend who is a herbal tea fanatic so got her a box of these for her birthday. She was equally delighted and so in my opinion, they make an excellent gift choice too.
Being a frequent tea reviewer, I though I had tried some quality brews in my time - but none of them compare to the quality and attention to detail of the produce that 'TeaPigs' make. This review focusses specifically on the 'Organic Honey Bush and Rooibos' variety of TeaPigs tea, but the company also make a plethora of other brews and concoctions.
TeaPigs tea is whole leaf only - meaning that the powdery substance which is found in your 'normal' everyday cuppa isn't present. And because real whole leaf tea doesn't brew as well in paper teabags, TeaPigs tea use something a bit different... 'Tea Temples'. The temples are basically biodegradable silk containers which are designed to allow the tea-leaves space to infuse properly - and they look really cool.
The packaging in general from TeaPigs is beautifully designed and has a homemade feel about it - from the beautiful illustrations on the brown card box, to the playful typeface down the side, these are certainly a selection of nice looking teas.
Upon dropping your Organic Honey Bush and Rooibos Teabag... sorry... 'temple' into your cup, you need to brew for around three minutes, or according to taste. Some people like to add a splash of milk with rooibos, but I don't bother, and consume it au naturel, as they say.
The flavour is smooth and subtle with a pleasant, almost spicy, warming aftertaste. The drink is naturally sweet, and as such, dieters occasionally drink rooibos as it generally requires less sugar than regular tea. The instructions on the packaging suggest adding an extra spoon of honey if required, but personally, I find the sweetness to be just about right.
'So, how much will all this quality set me back?' you may ask - well, the fifteen pack of this particular variety is normally in the region of £3.99 - and that is quite a lot for only fifteen brews - the pretty packaging, quality ingredients, and clever design obviously comes at a price!
All in all, TeaPigs Organic Honey Bush and Rooibos tea is an excellent and pleasant tasting drink which I would highly recommend. The question is, are you wiling to pay over the odds for the extra quality?. I think as a gift, these teas are great, but for general day to day purchases they are just too pricey. A big thumbs up nevertheless.
