Advantages: It does taste nicer than Twinings normal Earl Grey tea...
Disadvantages: ... but not different enough, I did expect something more from this tea!
I love Earl Grey tea. I drink a ton of the stuff. I much prefer it over normal everyday PG tips type of tea, and it's been this way for a few years now. I have my favourite brand, Clipper, which is the only Earl Grey I try to stick it because it tastes a million times better than Twinings, so you're probably wondering just why I am reviewing this limited edition Earl Grey tea made by them!
Twinings first started back in 1706 when Thomas Twining first set up his shop. More than 300 hundred years later and Twinings is everywhere, and believe it or not, they still sell tea from Thomas's little shop on London's Strand! Earl Grey tea has a very distinctive flavour as it is blended with bergamot, a fragrant citrus fruit. It is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, a prime minister in the 1830s who received a gift of tea flavoured with bergamot oil.
As I mentioned before I love Clipper's Earl Grey tea bags the best, but when I was in Morrisons I noticed these on the shelf as they were on offer. There were a selection of 'Limited Edition' teas by Twinings and when I noticed the Blossom Earl Grey I just knew I had to try it. This particular tea contains bergamot, of course, but also the floral taste of orange blossom. At £1.50 for a box of only 20 tag bags, it isn't really going to break the bank.
Twinings have described this limited edition tea with talk of how orange trees flower as winter turns to spring, and as the snow melts the sun gently warms the fresh orange blossom fills the air. They wanted to capture this moment by creating a mix of sweet orange blossom flavour and citrus bergamot, making a black tea which will brighten your day and warm you inside out, apparently! It says on the box that they've only made a limited number of this tea so to try it before it's gone.
The first thing which disappointed me with this tea is the fact that tea bag inside is in it's own separate packaging. Talk about the use of unnecessary packaging, they don't do it on their normal earl grey tea bags so why with this one? It also means each tea bag has that string with the bit of paper on the end of it, again more waste of packaging.
Being a big lover of Earl Grey tea I was so excited to try this limited edition flavour. After boiling the kettle, letting it stew for a couple of minutes, then adding a splash of milk (yes I'm a type who takes a small amount of milk with my earl grey!) I settled down to give it a try. Now normally with Twinings Earl Grey I don't find the flavour as strong or as nice as with Clipper tea, which is why I don't usually buy Twinings version. With this tea, I could smell the usual wonderful aroma of Earl Grey, but I didn't sense anything different, certainly not sweet orange blossom. I've had around 5 cups of this tea now and whilst it does seem to taste nicer than their plain earl grey, it's not different enough to make me want to buy this tea again. If I really concentrate when I'm drinking it, then I can just about taste a very slight hint of orange, but I guess I was expecting more, probably a very different twist on the normal earl grey. The difference however isn't really too noticeable, and so this tea for me was a huge disappointment.
It's nicer than Twinings normal Earl Grey tea bags, but not different enough to make me want to buy this again, hence my rating. There are 2 different types of tea in the new limited edition range, including this one and a one named Rose Garden. The normal price is £2.30 for 20 tea bags, however I got mine in Morrisons for only £1.50.
Summary: Earl Grey tea with a hint of orange blossom... if you really concentrate.
