There was a cloud of publicity when 4uNet came out offering you free internet access for just £19-99 which included the price of the dialer as signing for 4u meant that you had to go through their telephone system. I signed up during March and paid my 20-00 and was chuffed with my buy. Until I tried to use it that was!! Initially the connectibility of the service was very very bad. It was a bit like X-Stream but not quite as bad, a present day equivalent would b LibertySurf as you had to leave it dialling up for ages due to constant engaged tones. To be fair to 4u, the connectability improved after a while but it was still nowhere near first time connections which sort of went against the promises that they made. However as has been happening recently with free call ISP's, 4UNet decided to shut their ISP service down in September of 2000 because they weren't making enough money. I was mad at the time but looking back I don't miss the constant engaged tones!
I have been with 4unet for a few months and what can I say, an absolute pile of rubbish! To be fair I received the box quite quickly but that is the only good thing I can say about them. When trying to connect to the internet with them I saw a different side to my personality - I became a monster!!!!!! I was lucky to be connected after 16 attempts! And they would give you these annoying messages "Check that your modem is connected to the telephone box" (something like that)and "there is no answer" and "the server is not responding". The other annoying thing was sometimes when I started dialling a number on my phone, the line would be engaged before I finished dialling, or I would hear dialling noises when I was in conversation. I rang 4u's customer services and the woman I spoke to was very rude and said "it's nothing to do with us". To date I have never received a telephone bill from 4u (which was meant to be distributed monthly), and they have two hopes of expecting me to afford to pay months and months of telephone calls in one go!! Now they have informed people that they will be charging at the end of September, it will probably make people that have been unhappy with the service go elsewhere. I have now changed to ntl: What a difference!!!!
A few months ago 4unet were advertising extensively on TV and they sounded good, perhaps too good to be true. 30% off calls? great! 0800 access all the time? wicked! free sevice? go for it! So we went for it. First there was the wait until the little connection box arrived. Then there were the problems activating the account, with the email sent to technical support completely ignored (of course, if they can charge for telehpone support, why provide free email support?). The £20 off phone bills turned out to be 4 vouchers of £5 for each monthly phone bill, but 4 months on, we are yet to receive the first bill. When we enquired on the matter of bills they basically said they didn't get their act together yet... The lines are often busy, the connection is slow and you cannot send email from any other pop based addresses (say if you have another isp for backup). The server goes periodically mad and bounces email all over the place. And the latest is that they got their act together, very much so, they are starting to charge! 1p a minute in theory, but it is 2p peak time (and don't forget to add VAT to that). If that was not bad enough, they send you an email encourgaing to join the paid service sooner for a chance to win a prize. Yeah, right. A few more months have gone by and still no sign of a bill. Then the little box stopped working and a recent BT bill revealed that since October calls we made through the box went actually through BT, at the normal rate. I suppose now 4unet is dead and buried and hopefully they will not hit us with that long awaited bill as the cost of frustration with their appalling service seems to be enough. Latest update - April is here and stil no bill from 4unet, hopefully we will never hear from them again. Now we save 40% on calls with Sky Talk and have unmetered internet access with Freeseve for £12.99 a month. Will write ops on both soon.
I subscribed to 4unet in May, lured by the totally free internet access. The deal was that you bought a box for £20 to divert your calls through them and all your internet calls were free, plus you got your £20 back in vouchers against your phone bill. I've had a few problems with connection and downloads but thought it was a small price to pay for the free calls. Worryingly though, I've yet to get a bill from them! Then I received an e-mail to say that from September they are terminating the free service. So now they aim to charge 1p per minute off peak and 2p at all other times. Now I guess it's better than 4p per minute during the day, but when you've got used to logging on at any time and for as long as you like, it's a bit depressing to think of huge phone bills again! If anyone can let me know of other ISP's that don't charge a huge monthly wack for free access, I'd be most grateful!
I signed up to 4unet months and months ago and, if you enjoy sitting at your computer for hours trying to connect then this is the service for you. I signed up to have a monthly phone bill but, as yet have never had one, how I will be expected to pay for it now I really don't know. I am waiting to hear from NTL as I have heard they are a good provider. It's no wonder 4unet are going to start charging in September if they haven't charged anyone yet. I think that when they do start charging they will go out of business totally. Very hard to connect to which can be extremely annoying. Slow downloads. Cut you off every hour. Not a good service at all
I suppose 4unet could have been described as "you get what you pay for". ie. nothing is what you'll receive for the service. I went on line with them during April, free internet dial ups on the provision I use their telephone service, which was cheaper than BT (who isn't), so it was an extremely attractive package. To start with, the telephone adapter they sent did not work, so I informed them so and have done so on a number of times. At the time of writing (13/08/2000), I have still not got a working dial up adapter (it's a pain having to manually dial the access codes and the full STD). I still haven't received a bill from them, even though it is supposed to be monthly. I'll proberably be hit with a huge one because they coudn't administer my account properly. Then there is the internet service itself. At first, it was good but after a few weeks, they started to cut users off after an hour's use - downloading has become a nightmare using their connection, music in 'Real' format ends up having to be downloaded more than once, which, running at 49333 bps, is a bit slower than rival companies ISP's. Then there is the unreasonable practise of blocking every aspect of AllAdvantage (proberable to deter people turning their computers on, dialing a free access number and getting paid for adverts that are not viewed). That would be valid but all the pay to surf programs require the program to be active constantly, ie a mouse movement every 30/60 seconds to register or one will not be paid for online time, which is fair after all. The mail server/program is extremely unreliable; emails have even deleted themselves, read emails have returned as unread and emails won't always save properly (some emails are important and if one cannot trust one's ISP to keep one's data safe, well that's bad to say the least. Even the logging in proceedure is awkward. Type in your user id, ta
b to your password, type that and press enter to access mail. You can't, you have to left click on an icon and, if you can get near the server, are greeted with a continue link to press. The server will not allow you to save emails you send, although you are supposed to be able to. Customer support is a joke. They do not even acknowledge emails, nevermind resolve the issues. Their service report on the site is also a joke as every day there was a problem, which nothing is ever mentioned about except every few weeks a 'slight' probelem is posted. That is, when one can actually log on the system. After being told to switch the dial up number a few times, the unreliability of the service, well, it's a joke. Now they expect customers to pay to use this service. No way will I pay to use their service when the free dial ups end on 5th September. All in all, a pretty awful service and if they want people to use them, they will have to go back to the drawing board and start again - with a different name so that no-one will know where the service came from! AMMENDMENT - The day after I posted this report on "DooYoo", 4uNet lifted the block on AllAdvantage. A victory!
I have never ever written a review of anything so bear with me. This so called company have been very poor in the way they manage this service. I have been with 4unet for about three months. I had in my infinate wisdom used my birthday funds to pay for the switch over from B.T to 4unet hopeing to have free Internet for ever! I have just received an e-mail to confirm withdrawel of this service as from september. Gutted was the first feeling that came to mind, anger was the second. I just about put up with having to wait 20 minutes to conect and allways being dissconected after an hour(sometimes in the middle of a download), but to stop this service is just typical of all these so called free services. Too say i'm sick is an understatement.
overall a Good service. It is hard to get connected though. It takes around 15 tries on some occassions. You also get 20% off you phone calls. They are planning on charging soon though. If you sign up now though you will miss the 9.95 for connection. The on line and off line help is non exsistant. It also dis-connects every hour on the hour which can be annoying if you are downloading so you will need something like Go!Zilla so you can resume the download afterwards.
Starting on September 5th,4unet is going to start charging for the phone calls to its internet service.Although they have already taken my creditcard details once, they now want them again. Why??? In the past few weeks the service has become worse then ever before, which begs the question,is it worth paying for 4unet? In my opinion NO.Lots of people I have spoken to have also said that they are changing providers for the same reasons as myself. Unless 4unet pull their socks up,they will find themselves out of buissness.
I have been with this shower for about 12 weeks and can honestly say they are crap. It takes any thing from 10 minutes to 1 and a 1/2 hours, mind you i have become a master of solitaire while waiting for connection. Saying that when you do get connected it`s nice knowing the call is free even though the phones been tied up half the night, but what ever you do while you are connected dont go for a Tom Tit or you will find when you get back you will have to start all over again. As for the seach engine speed i think a 1st class self addressed envelope would be quicker. In my opinion you are better of with BT at least whilst i was with them i got connected straight away.
I thimk the arrival of 4Unet back in November 99 has had its ups and downs. Basically the main up is that after a flat fee of 20 quid you can surf for free for as long as you want. But when the internet is busy at around 6-10 o'clock i suggest you dont bother trying to dial up. Sometimes it takes up to thirty times to connect, and sometimes not at all, and sometimes straight away. it is sort of double edged sword. wot to do?
A lot of people here seem to be down on this ISP. I have to admit that after registering it took ages before I recieved anything through the post so that I could activate my account and also I had some problems with them taking the one off £20 connection fee a couple of times. However when I contacted them this was sorted out very quickly. When I first started using 4unet I found that it did take quite a while to get online but recently it has connected really quickly. Maybe not first time every time but it is much better now than when I first used it. It is no specific hardship. In my opinion it also doesn't seem to be that slow. After all with completely free access after the one off £20 payment it seems very reasonable to me. I can browse the net at anytime of the day or night for however long I want without thinking that it is costing a fortune. The calls on the phone service are charged but I believe it is 30% less than the BT standard rate.
4unet has fast download speeds if you use it at the right times between seven in the morning until around three at night. Even though i have been signedup to this servieor over seven weeks i haven`t recieved a monthly bill yet whih is quite worrying though. For recieving this service you also have to use a box which lowers your phonebill (apparently). I have found that their are two numbers whichyou can use with 4unet one 0808 1050002 which will not let you use alladvantage or a similar service but with the other, 0800 09611623 you can use alladvantage, though it can take longer to connect using this number. So if the second number is used you can actually make money all of the time while you are on the internet and use this to put towards your normal phone bill if it ever arrives!
I joined 4UNet on the launch day - 1st November 1999, when it was completely free to join (No £19.99 charge - they are currently charging). Up until about March the service was excellent, but since then it has taken approximately 10-20 redials to become connected. Once connected you are restricted on what you can access. They have blocked access to ALL external news servers, most Pay for surfing sites. The speed is fairly slow as well. They have reported though, that they will be providing some new access numbers within the next few weeks. Please Note: Callnet0800, 4UNet, F1Racing, are all the same company and the same Internet Service Provider
I Think 4unet Are a complete waste of time and money. I entered in my details they took the money but after 5 weeks I have not received the box. I went to a friends has to use it , it took 30 mins to connect which is wrong. The downloads speeds were appalling. The is virtually no support. Newsgroups don’t work. You would expect something decent for 20 pounds but I course you don’t get it. I expected much better. My computer kept on crashing because of the poor connection and I kept on getting cut off.
