What a huge failure altavista is - they promised for £50 that a least 500,000 people would have 0800 access for that flat yearly fee. Some time ago altavista admitted failure when 1000's of people had already signed up over the net. With those lucky ones who did get on they are saying it is slow and full of thousands of adverts, is this just another rip off. Altavista was the one to kick of the excitement with unmetred ISP's in the first place, but they aren't setting much of an example to them. First they go and limit the amount of people that can join up, then they go and raise the price from 10 pounds a year up a little bit, and then they go and delay their service because their servers at the time were absoloutely awful! Once Altavista do release the service it should be good though, because Altavista has been providing excellent service to literally BILLIONS of people every year, for many years in the past. The whole sorry saga of Alta Vista's unlimited free internet offer, along with other recent disappointments, notably lineone's renegging on its own deal, has seen a plunge in consumer confidence in the net. What are these companies playing at? All we can hope is that the idiots who dreamt up these schemes have paid with their jobs, as a lot of people have been stung by these shenanigans. A hard line, I know, but these people have strung a lot of people along for a long time. I,m a person who likes a bargain, my family call me "MAGPIE", I,m always trawling round charity shops, car boot sales. My motto is.....Unless it,s free, I can,t afford it!!! Imagine my delight at hearing of all these "FREE" internet access offers, I was like a kid in a sweet shop, wondering which one to have, I tried for Altavista (along with hoardes of other like minded people) only to have my "sweets" put back under the counter and told the shop was closing. As a search engine Alta Vista are excellent, as a basic ISP they are also very good. However, when an ISP of the size of Alta Vista go to great lengths (and indeed kick off the whole unmetered access revolution in the UK) to publicise their unmetered access and 170,000 sign up in good faith only to be told down the line that it will never exist despite numerous "modifications" to their charges, it makes you wonder about their credibility and future.
