Advantages: Erm...good home page!
Disadvantages: Bad customer services, slow speeds..
We first signed up with AOL about four years ago. The main reason we picked them, was at the time it was one of the most popular internet providers we knew, so we thought big name must mean good service.
We started off with dial up. Neither of us very tech minded, it seemed the simplest thing for us. I think it took almost a month before we got fed up with dial up! It was simple enough to set up, they sent us out everything we needed and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. At first, the speed didnt seem too bad, but the longer we had it, the slower it got. And of course, big down side to dial up is not being able to use your house phone at the same time. We were paying £17.99 a month for this service, and as the connection got slower we decided it was time for an upgrade.
So, we decide to go for broadband. I cant remember exactly what speed it was, but it was one of the slowest broadband connections they did, and this cost us £22.99 a month. Again, they sent us out a wireless router, everything we needed and clear cut instructions, It was all simple enough to install, and when it was up and running we were amazed at the difference. You really could see then just how slow broadband had been. And I could use the house phone! But again, after a short while, we noticed the connection seemed to be getting slower and slower, at some points as slow as broadband.
Again, we upgraded, and went to the quickest connection they had, at £34.99 a month. And again, after a while connection slowed down.
We switched for a while to a different internet providor, going for their highest braodband speed, and never had a problem until we moved and couldnt take the same providor with us, so we ended up going back to AOL.
So far we have had no speed problems, but dealings with customer services has been ropey! We have been having problems with wireless, and when my partner rang up a few weeks back, he ended up ending the call as the guy was trying to offer him other servides, and my partner couldnt understand a word he was saying, so he was hardly helpful!
Summary: Good speeds to start with, then they slow down!
