Advantages: Free 50 hour trial
Disadvantages: No POP email, Program constantly running, Bad connections
Well here goes my opinion of AOL! When I bought my new computer, I had an AOL setup icon on the desktop. I decided to join to get the free 50 hours, to get me started on the internet, and then cancel my subscription. That was the biggest mistake imaginable! First of all, AOL uses a great big program to connect you, which covers email, browsing, and everything else. You can't just connect to the internet and run whatever browser you like. The Program is constantly running while you are connected, wasting loads of RAM. Well it wouldn't be too bad if I could always get connected! Whenever I tried to connect it went through all the usual processes, then told me I was connected. No such luck. Websites were not loading, email was not downloading, but when I picked up the phone in the other room I heard something going on. I tried to exit the program, but as I said, you must sign off before you can exit. It wouldn't even sign off! In the end I pulled the plug on the whole computer, but I was STILL connected! I had to pull the modem cable out for about five minutes to break the connection. This continued for a couple of weeks, only getting connected every now and again, so I decided to phone up and cancel. The woman told me that the problem was that the number was wrong, so she gave me a new number, and extended my membership. Would you guess it, the problem continued! I decided to cancel not too long ago, and I was a very unhappy customer. In my opinion, stay clear of AOL, to save your hair going grey prematurely due to stress!
