Some years back I took out my first broadband contract and I did so with AOL, the reason I used AOL was simply that I had heard of them a lot and assumed they must be good but the fact is I was wrong.
My time using AOL was a mixed bag really, for the first few months I was happy but then I had never had broadband before so I knew no better.
After a few months though I kept getting disconnected and usually at the worst possible times, I also noticed my speed dropping dramatically at evenings and weekends and sometimes it was almost as bad as dial up.
I soon noticed that many broadband companies were offering much faster speeds than AOL and for around the same price as I was paying so I decided to move on.
Trouble with moving was that in order to change companies I needed a MAC code from AOL otherwise known as a migration code and AOL basically refused to give me one.
I explained to them that I wanted to move on as I could get 6 MEG broadband for the same price as I was paying for my 2 MEG from them and I had been with them for over two years so I had no contract ties with them but they simply refused to listen.
After around a month of negotiation and speaking to several different people a MAC code was finally granted but to my horror although I had moved to Talk Talk broadband, AOL were still taking money from my bank.
A few weeks later and I got my money back from them and stopped any further payments but then I started to get debt letters claiming I owed them money which I certainly did not, this took over four months to stop.
I was totally unhappy with almost everything about AOL, their customer service is the worst I have encountered and as for technical help it is a joke. Their call centre was in India and I could barely understand the people I spoke to and they knew about as much about computers as I did at the time (not a lot)!!
I would urge people to never get involved with these people as they are probably the worst internet service provider around and as well as your time with them being horrendous it will only get worse when you try to leave and to top it all they are also one of the most expensive.
My time with Talk Talk was fine and I now have the wonderful 20 MEG broadband from Virgin media which is simply awesome, I still look back and wonder how AOL can get away with their terrible service and still claim to be the best!!
Summary: Dont touch them with a barge pole!!

- 03/02/09 I've not had many problems with AOL but when there has been a problem I hate ringing their scripted Indian call centre's! |

- 03/02/09 You are so right about this lot. Glad you have moved on to Virgin Media, I have their new 50 MEG service and it is lightning quick, how we have moved on since dial up!! - Colin |

- 03/02/09 It seems that a lot of people have had AOL problems in the past. They probably are going to be extinct soon in fact. =) Good review though! |
