Advantages: Cheap, Freephone help numbers

Disadvantages: Software kills PC and connection is slow, Massive waits for assistance, causes premature ageing

AOL are by far the worst ISP I have ever used. Dont do it, I plead with you!!

They suck you in with their flat rate spiel and then offer you all sorts of deals to keep you with them!

For a start, the browser thing you install is naff, it takes ages to load, does loads of unecessary things and then half the time fails to connect.

The access numbers are always busy, or give you recorded messages and when you finally do get connnected, you have to wait for all their screens to load up - even if you try to turn them all off, they still god damn load up!

Then there is the dotted red line across the top of the screen which kills the computer and forces you to reboot every once in a while.

If you ask me, although its free, it isn't worth the stress and i would stick with paying local call rates.

When you want to phone up and cancel your subscription, I think they put you on hold for 30 minutes listening to the same 3 tracks over and over again in the hope that you will hang up and stay another month. Beleive me, I have done this so many times, I should know!!

When you do finally get to speak to someone, they ask you why you want to cancel and when you tell them its because their software is a nghtmare, they have a go at you and tell you its all your own fault. I work in the Internet Industry, so god help those people who dont know a lot about computers!

Oh, and one more thing, almost every time you disconnect, it spends 10 minutes updating AOL with new features - its SO ANNOYING....Arrghghghghgh...im getting frustrated just thinking about it. If you are in a hurry to shut down your pc - you'll just have to switch it off at the mains!!

Steer Clear, it will save you a lot of stress. If you do go with AOL, expect a few years to be knocked off your life because they will see to that alright, premature ageing is in the smallprint!

Maybe you have a higher spec PC than mine, although I wouldnt expect a PIII 500 to have those sorts of problems (which is what i have). I even rebuilt the PC and it still did it afterwards :(

I definitely don't work for aol and sometimes have trouble getting connected but this 'computer killing red line' is something I have never come across in 12 months with this ISP.

Im not the only one, I know of at least 5 people who had the same red line computer killing problem, and the engaged lines. I guess you must be lucky! You dont work for them by any chance do you?
