Advantages: Easy to use and CHEAP
Disadvantages: None
I bought myself an Asda sim card for 50p (from Asda) because I had read on Moneysavingexpert.com that this was just the cheapest pay-as-you-go network to be on. It was quite a while ago that I did this (almost a year) and I have been very happy with the service.
Previously, I was with T Mobile pay as you go. I had been with them for years and it was the usual story - loyalty does not pay. I am not interested in having a contract because I do not use it heavily - I think I contact about 10 people regularly and only two often. I don't like to chat for long on the phone. I mostly like to use text. I don't have any fancy internet of interactive stuff. I sound miserable but that is how it is.
T Mobile was charging me around 10p per text and 20p per min calls. I would top up £10 and it wouldn't even last me a month - even though I'm anti social in a mobile kind of way.
With Asda, texts are 4p and calls 8p a minute. I can top up £5 and it will often last me more than a month. That's more like it.
What is more, is that Asda network is the Vodaphone network - and I find that this is much better than the T Mobile network. I have been able to get a signal camping in the sticks (in Wales). Never so before.
When I transferred to the Asda network I even managed to keep my own number by calling T Mobile and getting my Port Authorisation Call (PAC). This made the transfer easy as I had to do no tedious calling of my directory numbers.
I find it easy to top up. Asda give you a contact number - in fact - mine came already on the SIM so I did not even need to record or remember it. I registered my debit card and now when I top up over my mobile with the free call number, it is a simple affair, lasting only about a minute.
I think the Asda network is excellent! If you are already on a Vodaphone Pay as you go - you can have the same service but for MUCH cheaper. If you have a phone locked into another network - it may be worth your while to get the phone unlocked and buy a Sim. I think sometimes Asda gives them away too.
Summary: Best value pay as you go
