Advantages: Big Company
Disadvantages: Get lost in the heirarchy
BT are in my opinion a reasonably good company, and they are undoubtedly the biggest telecoms company by size in the UK.
I have had dealings with 3 phone companies: Cable London, Telewest and BT.
Cable London were the worst. The previous tennants of our flat had Cable London TV and phone lines. We wanted to transfer the phones over to our names when we moved in. Over the course of about 2 months, Cable London screwed us around and made excuses not to connect us. Apparently the people who lived here before hadn't paid their last bill (which they had), so the line couldn't be transfered over. And we couldn't start a new account as their system couldn't handle two accounts at the same address.
Finally we got so fed up we called BT and asked them to install the lines. They turned up on time and installed the lines very quickly.
A month later I wanted to get ADSL, and unfortunately this took BT about 3 months to deal with as there is a huge waiting list and also there was a problem transfering my details from one address to the one I'm in now.
When it did come to being installed, it was done very quickly and efficiently.
Telewest is in my opinion the best of the three, as they are cheaper, and much more willing to accomodate your needs. We had a new line installed at home and they charged a £15 flat rate fee which was brilliant as it took them 4 hours to install it all since they had to snake the wires all around the walls in the house.
BT have the advantage of size and experience, but their size may also slow them down in some cases. All in all it's a fairly reliable service though.
