Advantages: You get a telephone line
Disadvantages: Set up charges excessive, poor customer services, untrustworthy
I'm not really sure where to start with this review, but I've been a customer on a number of occassions - and unfortunately I am today
When I lived in Taunton with my first wife we had a BT line and eventually had a plug in device so that all our calls went through Eurobell (became Telewest and now part of Virgin) which worked out a little cheaper.
After moving down to Plymouth, my second wife had a BT and Telewest line in the house - greedy or what, well anyway after a couple of years I got rid of the BT line. The thing that really got to me was when I transferred from dial up to AOL broadband, and BT had to make adjustments to the line. When they did I would often pick up the phone and there would be random conversations (outside uk) going on when all I wanted was to ring someone a little more local.
I moved to a flat in August last year, and unbelieveably Virgin would not do flats! I looked on the internet and saw BT's advert which clearly states in most circumstances they won't make the connection charge of £124.99, or will make a lower one. Well, we rang BT from a mobile in our flat and they confirmed there was an active line and that it wouldn't cost us anything, so stupid me went online at our local library the following day and ordered their service.
To our astonishment they levied the £124.99, and despite many phone calls and e-mails they refused to back down on the fact they had misled us. Well, what could we do, as we were in a flat and desperate for a phone line we had no choice, but I will never choose the again - under any circumstance. The only reason we're still with them is the old addage - they had usu over a barrel - we had a 6 month tenancy, and there contract was 12, and by moving it was a new one, so we're not linked into 12 months, we're actuall in for 18.
So for now, we're keeping our calls to a minimum, or after 6pm an we're still paying around £18 per month even on paperless billing. They do offer a range of other services - the only one we use is the free answering service, but from what I know and have heard I would never use any of them.
Whenever we can, we obtain phone numbers free off BT's website, and I make apoint not to use their directory enquiries line.
These days, you are likely to be diverted to a call centre in India, but they will forward your call to one of their local (UK) centres, but from what I have been told from my former stepson (a trainee manager with them) they can often be quite abusive or make you feel that your complaint is your fault.
Summary: I would never use there service again
