Disadvantages: Incurring heavy charges
Felt that I must draw attention to the 118 500 Directory Enquiries so that others will not get caught like me. After giving me the number I needed the operator asked if I wanted her to connect me. I said yes and proceeded to talk for 17mins. It was not until I got my bill that I saw that I had been charged for the whole call at 99p per minute! The telephone book states that 118 500 charges 99p per minute plus 40p connection. Reading this you would think that was all there was to it but the operator did not point out to me that if she connected the call I would continue to be charged at the premium rate. Beware!! On contacting BT they at first said that the £18 call charge must stand but I did not accept this and they did reduce the call charge by £16 because the operator did not tell me I would be charged at this high rate. Why does'nt BT explain this in the telephone book or anywhere else for that matter? I know of one other person who used 118 500 recently and they were connected but not told that the whole call would be charged at premium rate. Perhaps its only a few who are not aware of this but I suspect there are lots more. I trust that this will save others incurring this extortionate charge.
Summary: BT continue to charge for a service that has terminated.
