Advantages: Reputable name

Disadvantages: Disconnects, the terrible home hub, slow and poor customer service.

I write this review of BT Broadband on the day I have decided to finally leave the company and seek my broadband service through either Virgin or Sky. It may be slightly dearer elsewhere but after the problems I have had with BT, enough is enough.

I have been with BT Broadband for the best part of 5 years now and for the first 2 of them there was no problems whatsoever, then they brought out the terrible home hub and it all started to go downhill from there.

To start with, I pay for up to 8mg speeds and whilst I appreciate that it does state up to, my speeds seldom get beyond 1mg and I have spoken to them about this many times and they give me a stock regional answer. Well, I am pretty sure I am in the same region as my next door neighbour and he gets upwards of 6mg speeds even on a bad day.

The feeling of being fobbed off from the BT broadband helpdesk is not an unusual one as you can regularly spend an hour on there just trying to get them to understand your problem. Then they go through the same steps over and over again despite you saying that you have tried that as you know fine well that is what they are going to say when you ring them.

Don't get me wrong, the email service and the BT Vision TV service is great and I will be sad to see them go, but it just cannot go on disconnecting all the time. The terrible BT Home Hub, whilst looking nice, is the third I have had and the third faulty one I have had. It simply should not disconnect and reset 10-20 times a day like it does. It has disconnected once while I have been writing this review. To compound this, it takes a good 2 minutes to boot up again. The "always on" claim of BT is a joke in my opinion.

I urge you all to shop around as Virgin and Sky especially are putting down their own networks that alleviate the need for using a BT line.

Summary: Avoid at all costs

Funny you should mention this! Today I spent 20 minutes on the phone to them being passed around - I left them at the beginning of November but suddenly realised that although they ackonowledged my departure they are still deducting direct debits. Do watch this!

A lot of companies advertise speeds they won't give you. Know a guy who was with AOL and only when he threatened them with legal action did they flick a switch to increase his speed.
