Advantages: High speeds, can be on net and make/receive phone calls, free access to the net,

Disadvantages: £150 connection charge, limited access to the net,

I haven't signed up with BT Open World as yet, but it is very tempting.

It has a one of connection charge of £150.

It only seems to cost £39.99 a month with free (un-metered) access to the net.

Could this be the end of the traditional modems. You have to put your hands up with agreement that normal modems are very very slow. Especially when you are downloading something.. on 56k modem the download speed at its best is no more than on average 4Kb/sec..!!

I need to download a security patch for one of my programs, but because the patch is nearly 30Mb in size, I can't be bothered to download it as it will take ages for it to be completly downloaded. This is where this new ISP will come very handy.
BT OpenWorld has speeds of up to 500Kb/sec. Obviously the speeds of downloading of files wont be that high.. but definitely higher than a poxy 4Kb/sec..!! and therefore would take much less time to download huge files.

Another main feature of BT OpenWorld is that you can be on the net and still receive incoming calls or make calls (new technology).
At my house we miss loads of calls since the computer is connected to the Net quite frequently, so this new feature will be very useful for users with this problem.

Now for some catches (there's always some hidden).
If you read carefully on the BT OpenWorld web site, it isn't actually unlimited access to the net. Apparently you can't use Netmeeting or ICQ! Grrr!! Don't understand why ICQ wouldn't work, but can understand why Netmeeting wont. BT killing competition?? (Since you can make calls using Netmeeting). Wonder what other programs that might not work?

It's not available to all cities at the moment; you'll have to check the web site for details.

I don't think I will be signing up for it just yet. Maybe wait a couple of months and then i'll come back to this section and see what the opinions are abo
ut the service from the people who have signed up for it!

But £40 a month with free high-speed access to the net is VERY tempting!

No ICQ, is that right? I can't understand why they would want to bar that.
