If the spring of 2000 is remembered for anything, it will be the time when the internet revolution took off in the UK. Along with thousands of others I listened with growing excitement of all the promises of free internet access. I read up as much as I could on all of those that were offering unmetered free isp services. I could not choose between callnet0800 and NTL. So in my wisdom I decided to sign up to both. Do not ask me why I signed up for two at the same time, well the answer is I thought if I get connection problems with one then the other will be sitting on my machine. Also I had heard tales of lots of people signing up and as a result it was taking ages for people to get connected. Now as Christmas fast approaches I look back and am glad that I did sign up for NTL as well, I got the NTL disk (got it in May) and have been enjoying the service they provide. Callnet 0800 well all I got from them was the £19.99 taken from my bank. When I asked them about the service they told me it would be returned as they were not able to provide a service. Good I told the woman on the phone, she then went on to check my account details and anounced that they had no record of them having taken the money!!. For me to get my money refunded I would need to send them a copy of my bank statement. Having just read the latest Computeractive, I learn that casllnet have gone into receivership with a long list of creditors. It also seems unlikely that I will get my money refunded. In truth I am not too bothered OK I lost £19.99, but I have saved hundreds of pounds in internet charges since I got my NTL disk. So maybe signing up for them both was the right thing for me. As for the £19.99 Well I will advice the administrative receiver and see what happens. For any others that are also in the same position as me the name and address of the receiver is; Malcolm Cohen, BDO Stoy Hayward, 8 Baker Street, London, W1U
3LL.

thanatoszane - 28.11.00 Bad luck! I signed up to Callnet ages ago - they never took my money, and they never activated my account, despite lots of nagging. Since then I tried Force 9 and Freeserve, then went to Plus Net, where I am very happy.
Callnet are a rip off. (Well, were a rip off <g>) |
