Advantages: Fastest isp for a good number of months, Cheap, Very reliable
Disadvantages: No Free modem, Activation charge of £58 (one off)
I always do my homework before buying something. That should be apparent by the other reviews. Hundreds of Broadband ISPs but which one is best for me. Well after surfing the net for a few days I finally came across adslguide.org. This proved extremely useful in the search for an ISP. The criteria was to find an ISP for under £28 in order to be cheaper than a second line with internet on per month (dedicated internet line). Adslguide has a useful search page, where you select up to 6 ISPs and you get user feed back from the previous months, compared to the companies you select. It was mere chance that one of the companies I selected to compare was Eclipse.net.uk. This unknown to me then company, proved to be very highly rated and had by far the best stats. After browsing the website there were a number of packages. But living in a village limits these to lite 500 as I live more than 2km away for the 1mb package. Eclipses packages go from 512kbps, which is the standard broadband package at the moment, to 2Mbit services. Each package has the use of E-mail accounts, which can be created in the user control panel, or by e-mail, which is what I did. All of the e-mail accounts have a free virus shield, which scans the e-mails in the server and will not allow you to download the infected file. On the main Eclipse page you have access to the BBC broadband portal, which has GCSE bitesize, Weather, News etc at the click of a button. There is the option of purchasing a modem through the company. Unfortunately, unlike most other big ISPs, eclipse does not give you a free modem in a starter package. This is mainly because the company is a one-month contract company. Therefore if you do not agree with their service, you notify them and one month later you get a new ISP. I needed an ISP really, that did not throw in a modem, as I had already bought a router (£130). Another bad side is that the company does not o
ffer free activation. Most of the big companies throw this in for free. Eclipse however is a small company and it seems they cannot afford to do this yet. (Activation at the moment is about £58 inc VAT). Customer Service is first class. I had a couple of queries, which were dealt with in 24 hours. One was I couldn?t be bothered to setup the e-mail account, so I gave them 3 different e-mail aliases I would be happy with, and a couple of hours later they e-mailed me the e-mail box settings. So what were the main reasons I chose Eclispe.net.uk? **The FASTEST ISP in Britain! For a good number of months in a row!** I must say I cannot fault this claim. I live about 4.5km if not 5km away from the exchange. I would be happy with 40k/s download speeds, but I always receive 55-60k/s. **Always on** This is true. I have a router and left it on for 14 odd days, with no disconnection. **Unlimited download usability** I download 400Meg computer game updates regularly. It took 3 hours and 20 minutes one time to download the new steam patch for counter strike, which wasn?t bad going. **low latency** As an online gamer this is handy. A ping of 22 roughly most of the time is very good. I can say that overall I cannot fault the service. I have had only one day in 8 months where the service has been slightly slow for an hour. But I think the problem was at my end, as the phone lines were swinging heavily in the wind. Reliability is 100%. Keep up the good work eclipse. 5 out of 5.

In short, reliability in 2007 has been dire & as a result we're off to pastures new.
Bye bye Eclipse. |
