This service provider is now known as Breathe Telecom, at least when they answer the phone, but are part of Atlantic Telecom. I have been a satisfied customer of First Telecom, as they used to be known, since April 2000. The service is available to both BT and Cable users. To sign up is absolutely free, there is no subscription and no minimum monthly usage. Their Pay-later account is still the cheapest offering for all local w/end and evening calls and for national evening calls. Local weekend: 0.94p and local evening: 1.34p. National evening: 1.7p. They are also cheaper for calls to all mobile networks at all times. The minimum cost is 3.5p but calls are charged per second. As you access the service by an 0800 number cable customers avoid the 5p connection charge. Their website is at http://www.first-telecom.com/uk/home_services/paylater.shtml Contact them by sending an e-mail to email@example.com requesting a Pay-Later account. PLEASE mention that you were recommended by me, account holder no: 1641874, and ask them to ring you back at a convenient time to set up the account. Opening an account is quick and easy, giving them your credit or debit card details to set up a direct debit or continuous credit card authority to take payment. They will be really slow sending you the welcome package so make sure you ask them straight away for your 0800 access number or if with BT your four digit access code. You can then start using them within a few hours. Recommend friends and family to also open accounts and your account will be credited with £5. My service from them has been faultless. Connection is quick, there is no annoying welcome message, and I almost immediately get a dial tone and then fast connection to my required number. If like me you use several different telephone service providers; to ensure that everyone in the household uses the right one
I have set up appropriate auto dials. With talkative teenagers at home this set up is saving me quite a few pounds per month. You receive fully itemised monthly bills but one dis-advantage is that you cannot yet view your calls on line, a very useful feature offered by most other telephone providers. See also my review of the RingItOnLine account, also operated by Atlantic Telecom.
First Telecom offer prepay and pay later for land lines. I use pay later and find calls cost about half of BT's standard tariff (ignoring Friends and Family etc). All you need to do is enter a 4 digit code before the number you are dialling on your BT landline, or for a few pounds you can buy a box that does it for you. It is ideal for situations where a phone line is shared between different users eg in a flat share situation as one person can have an account with FT and the other with BT. (If there are more than two users each can have accounts with other operators eg OneTel) This saves a lot of arguement over the phone bill.
As the other comment says, using this with Orange or Virgin mobile is a great idea, as you are not paying for the 0800 call and peak national calls are only 4p/minute. This is a marked improvement on 35p/min on say ED50. If you call FT as an existing customer - tell them you plan to use a mobile phone on the account and let em know your phone number. this will enable their CLI (caller line identification) information, and means youwont have to put in your account number all the time (or pin!) You can even set numbers in your Nokia address book to say 0800xxxxxxxp0yyyyyyyyy where the x's are the FT number (dont make them public!!) and y's your number to be dialled! (the P is gotten by pressng the * key a few times in number entry) On top of this, if you introduce a friend to the service, you can both get an extra £5 of calls on your balance. Also, the overseas calls are fantastic - great call quality and calling the US peak was 4p/min last time I looked!!
First telecom is a great service to use in conjunction with your mobile phone take Orange for instance. I am on everyday 50 so I get free calls for 50 mins after 7pm but if I use the phone before this time they charge me 35p to call a land line and 40p to call a mobile. This is where 1st telecom comes in. They give you a 0800 number to ring which is free from orange you can then ring out through this number after enerring your account number and pincode. Call cost at peak time (the only time I really have to use it) 5p a min to call a landline and 17-20p a min to call a mobile. This is a really good serveice they also give you money to refer your friends :-)
