Advantages: None
Disadvantages: End up spending half the time dialing up
Freeserve at the moment is being an absolute pain. Connection is fine but after around 10 minutes when we have been doing things, it decides to drop the connection. When, we dial up, the noise it makes is very muffled and grainy compared to what it was like when we had no problem connecting. Occasionly it connects and nothing happens and Internet Explorer continually comes up with the "Page could not be displayed" window. Sometimes, the Dial-up Networking Box says either our User-name or Password is incorrect which, on checking, is right or a connection could not be established. Never have we got an engaged tone. Through reading the Message board about Off-Peak connections on Freeserve's website, many other people are experiencing the same sort of problems. So, if you are, you are not alone. If you would leave a comment to me, write your own opinion on this subject or find the message board in Freeserve and leave a message there, it will hopefully lead them to buck their ideas up and sort out the problems they should have solved weeks ago.

- 11/11/00 I had exactly the same issues up until i had BT come and check my line. My maximum connection speeds were 33,600 and i had line drops in abundance. It turned out to be a couple of loose wires in the main box running into the house. As soon as the engineer left, my connection speeds were up to 115,200 (x2 modem) and i had to turn off the speaker as the the connection and handshake was too loud. There are many other possible issues, like poor wiring in the area, old exchange, local cable firms fluffing their jobs or local noise affecting the line (machinary, close power cables, CB's and FM transmitters). The first thing to do if you can is try setting up a dial up connection to another provider and see how that performs, if you have the same issues, it is more likely to be your line at fault. |
