Advantages: not many, local call numbers have quick connection times
Disadvantages: not unlimited, hidden numbers in registry
Watch out for any ISPs who say their plans are unlimited because if you are using them too much, the sofware you use to connect to the internet has a hidden number in your registry which they can change at any time when people use the service too much. If you check your registry for your ISP's dial-in number and see if they have an 0845 number in it as well, which is a low cost number which you will pay to BT for every minute you are connected. So when you think you are connected through a free-phone number, part of your ISP subscription can be misleading because they hold these secret numbers in your registry. One service which does this is freeserve. I haven't tried everyone, but I am currently with powergen with whom I am very happy to a point, since it is hard to connect with them in the evenings.
If you do this search in your registry . Press the start button on your desktop, look for the programme RUN. Type in REGEDIT. This should bring up your registry. Please don't delete anything in here as it can mess things up if you don't know what you're doing. Then click on My Computer on the left hand pane. Go to Edit,
then Find. Type in 0845.
Then press Find Next. Let it search and it will bring up every 0845 number. You will see a list of names in the right-hand column for your internet service providers. See which one Freeserve uses.
Go to Edit again, and keep searching using Find Next. This will search your whole registry. This is a long search. Be prepared for lots of reading!
If you have other internet service providers you will find those as well. You will find out if they have 0845 numbers as well. Why should they have these numbers if you download the software from the internet? If you receive it on CD, there is a chance you need these 0845 numbers to connect.
If you are downloading the software off the website it will say open o
r save a file. If you save the file and look inside it you can do this by right-clicking the file and use your Open With and Notepad. Check the numbers that they use to connect for your service. They will only use the 0845 number if you are 'abusing' the unlimited service, i.e. over 10-12 hours a day. I don't like to use the term 'abuse'. Why should it be this when it is supposed to be an unlimited service?
I have used a lot of internet service providers in the past and I use it a lot for my own leisure. Some companies tell me they are updating their service and never get back to me. Freeserve is the first I know that has switched phone numbers on me, costing me a huge phone bill. When I was using it on their unlimited number, when I received my bill I realise I was using a 0845 number. This is when I checked it out. This was in my registry.
as I don't know how your computer is made up, and I'm no longer with them. I got a bill for £100 because of Freeserve, because
