Library access

Newest Review: ... I first joined as I seemed to recall being told something about having a PIN number for internet access. Joining the library doesn't take any time at all, from memory, and they no longer seem to ask for about twenty different types of ID either! What is rather grandly referred to as the 'IT Suite' is a collection of around 15 desktop computers in the upper floor of my local library. No pre-booking is needed and there isn't any limit on the amount of time that you can spend online, although you are asked to stop after an hour if there are other people waiting to access the computers. I'd be quite surprised if that ever happened though, a... more

I've always been a fan of my local library in Staffordshire. I love reading and I take my youngest son to 'Baby Bounce & Rhyme' at the library most weeks so I'm familiar with the layout of the building and most of the staff, who are all incredibly friendly and approachable. One thing I've never needed to use the library for was its free internet service, being in the fortunate position of having a trusty broadband connection at home (like the majority of the population now.) When my old bulky desktop PC decided to die a sudden death on me a few weeks ago, part of me was secretly pleased that I had a valid excuse to treat myself to a sparkly new laptop. I went into a library in Kings Lynn, Norfolk and tried to access the internet on these dodgy looking, screwed to the table, monitors. What nobody told me (and there was no signs) was that I had to become a libaray member. Sure so I signed up filled in a load of forms, signed this and that and got my wonderful membership card. I was told that I could now login using my membership number and PIN (not my bank one). I went and sat down on this plastic chair in front of this non removable keyboard with built-in mouse and typed my details in. After filling on more forms online before it would let me type in an URL, I was finally online ...  Read the complete review

Library access: Groovey! (142 words)

What an excellent idea - free internet access at libraries. This means that more and more people can get involved in the internet, which is good for everyone. The connection (at least in the library I was in) was very quick, much faster than my modem at home anyway. The staff there weren`t the most technically literate you`ll ever see, but they knew enough to help peolpe et to grips with the net. Any advanced help you`d need would have to come from another source. Then again that isn`t really a problem - the whole idea behind library internet access is to let new people on the net who wouldn`t otherwise get access. Those of us who have it at home should ...  Read the complete review

Here I am away from home for two weeks thinking that would be me of the net for two weeks at least. I am staying wat my sisters & as yet she has no access to the net. When I mentioned to my neice how I was going ti miss the internet for the next two weeks she kindly told me that access was free at the library! I am in Northampton & this library has 10 computers hooked up to the net, you just walk on in sit down & hey presto the whole world is at your fingertips. The system has been set up using a very limited search facility, but I did find a link to consumers interests from which I have found dooyoo, now I am here I can use the opinions ...  Read the complete review
