Now here's a story about consolidation in the telephone sector. Everyone knows about Localtel, and their free ISP, screaming.net. I was one of the lucky ones who got a locatel line (it was my spare line) and everything worked. By and large the sytstem worked, but there were problems. I had two occasions when faults developed on the line, leaving me with silence. Phoned BT, who said nothing to do with them. Phoned the localtel/worldonline, and the story was that the faults have been on the local loop, but bt, despite their responsibility for such, were trying to have nothing to do with it. Premium Review Cheap internet access? Truuuue (305 words)

I signed up for Localtel (now called World Online) many moons ago. We were some of the first lot in the country to have recieved flat rate internet access, and ohhh yeah did it make my friends jealous :) But how is the service today? I'm sorry to say that it has gone up and down since before. At first, I could connect first time every time with some nice fast speeds (on my 56k modem), services went from bad to better, bad again, better, bad etc etc but today? Well today they are decent, connections are first time except on very busy times when it can take 2 or 3. Speeds generally very fast. All I can criticise it for is the 2 hour disconnection, but ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review LocalTel: Localtel Hell! (348 words)

I was a Localtel customer and everything was great.. until I moved. I knew customer services were hard to contact but never really needed to contact them before then. I rung up a few weeks before I moved and filled out a moving house form over the phone. However, I needed a new phone point put in as my new house had not had one fitted. The wires etc were there but not the point. Localtel did not disconnected the line at my previous address for nearly 10 days. I had to attempt to contact the new tenants to ask them not to make phone calls!! I spoke to the moving house department on several occasions, and they told me to wait in for an engineer on the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The cheapest Internet provider (147 words)

Wordonline (www.worldonline.co.uk) I would agree with the other opinions, they have awful customer service, and erratic billing. But I think its getting better. What you get is 50 hours of calls for 6 pound a month extra and 100 hours of peak and peak for 15 pounds a month extra, cheaper than what bt offer(they dont tell you about additional 4 quid isp charge) plus if you spend more than your alloted time its only 1p a min any time peak of off peak. I have also been able to connect on the net, and quite a high baud rate. So why not change save dosh and get away from BT, which everyone who uses the internet, hates for some reason or other. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review LocalTel: Telephone provider with unmetered Internet access  (415 words)

World Online used to go under the name of Localtel, and their ISP was called Screaming.net. They were one of the first telephone providers to provide free unmetered Internet access, originally available at off-peak times for all customers who changed over their telephone provider and used Screaming as their ISP. Now World Online provides the whole service and offers a range of different price plans. Off peak unmetered Internet access costs £5 per month, or 24 hour unmetered access costs £15 per month. Unmetered access is limited to 100 hours per month, but I don't know of anyone who is online for that length of time! All normal call charges are ...  Read the complete review
