I have set up Direct Debit with ntl TWICE (and both times had to pay for the phonecall as their freephone number doesn't work any longer). However, they still managed to overlook that and have just sent me a letter saying that I haven't paid my bill and threatened to close my account!
In our household, we have ntl on the main TV and Sky on the one upstairs. With ntl, we have the one-line package which includes internet and telephone. So lets start with something positive. Ntl one-line is good value. You get broadband internet and digital tv for a very low monthly charge. Also, phone bills are minimal as they are included in the package. This is all very good and well, if it weren't for the fact that ntl's services are about as functional as a bucket with a hole in it. The TV is simply rubbish. While they have a good selection of channels, the speed of changing over is about as fast as a Turtle with a bad leg. It always feels like a real chore, to get the TV to respond to the remote. Also, some channels often freeze completely, rendering any attempt to change over about as successful as the Titanic's maiden voyage. The TV guide actually takes about 3 minutes to load and takes almost as long again to change between pages. We haven't even attempted to access any other services, since we don't usually have a whole day to spare. We also tried accessing interactive content. Apart from the fact that it doesnt exist, it takes ages to load a screen to tell you just that. Recently, the order of channels completely mixed up, so that rather then going from BBC1 to BBC2, it now goes from BBC1, to CNX, to BBC Parliament. Very helpful. In fairness, the telephone and internet have been fine, its just a shame that the TV services are so bad.
I'm not going to go into my usual lengthily analysis of the problems I have had with NTL as to be honest, I get so wound up about it when I do that I don't think it can be good for my health. Also, having read many of the op's here much of it seems to be covered. If - for some strange reason - you decide to purchase any NTL product beware the following: The engineer who installs your broadband/TV may or may not tell you pack of lies. He may or may not be willing to do his job and he may or may not actually turn up. Your phone bill may or may not include your free call allowance - CHECK EVERY BILL Your TV service WILL crash at least once a week The words on the set-top-box are NIT not NTL spelt wrongly (although it wouldn't surprise me...) Your Broadband connection WILL crash at least twice a week. You will not be able to get technical support if you have a wireless network EVEN IF the technician who installed it recommends one and refuses to put wiring in. Customer services will either: Lie to you Be totally incompetent in every other imaginable (and unimaginable) way Be unavailable when you are (they close at 8pm) Have a string of unbelievable excuses be unable to correct your problem and they will definitely be engaged They will definitely claim to have resolved all your problems - they won't have. You will continue to complain and experience all the above. You will still pay (an incorrect amount) for the service. You will not be compensated, apologised to or cared about. Beware - NTL are evil. Very very evil.
Well what can I say??? This has got to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my entire life, the NTL customer support line. We ordered NTL broadband 600K in February, ever since we have been experiencing our connection cutting out, sometimes up to 10 times a day, now on July 14th, our problem has just been finally fixed. It took NTL almost 6 months, 10 engineers, and me about 20 calls to get this problem fixed, now that it has been fixed, we get intermittent speeds, one moment it might be running fine, the next it will be running as slowly as a 56K modem. I have just written a letter to NTL demanding compensation for this, as I have lost around 2 weeks of work (I work from home) I am hoping that this will be upheld, if not I will not be happy. One thing to say, if you are considering having broadband installed, DON'T DO IT WITH NTHell. I have a friend who had his broadband service installed 2 days ago, and already he's starting to have the same problem. Please Please Please, don't do it with ntl, it'll be the worst mistake you ever make. On the customer service side of things, I found that it took up to an hour to speak to somene (which I have since heard is quite quick), I have also spoken to technical support before and been promised a call from someone to book a engineer within 24-48 hours, a week later, nothing, I call them "sorry sir we have no record of that request" 3 TIMES!!! Like I said before, just don't do it
I have just recently signed up to NTL. I did so because we needed a phone line, the internet and we would like digital TV. NTL offered a package that inclued all three, which would cost just £40 a month, and that included broadband internet!! They were very good about installing it. Luckily the person who lived in my house before had NTL, so everything was already there. NTL came out after 4 days of ordering it. They arrived 1/2 an hour earlier than what they said they would, and it only took them 1/2 an hour to install. I was a happy bunny!! The problems started just one day after we had NTL installed!! I went to make a phone call, and the phone was dead!! I called them and was put on hold for 1/2 an hour!!! The good thing was though they came out the next day to fix it! Then we had problems with the TV service! Not only does it keep going black and the peoples voices are sometimes behind them speaking!! But whenever we go to order a movie on Front Row it doesn't work! Once the whole system kept crashing. It told us to change the channel and try again in 2 minutes. We tried this three times and it still didn't work, by this time we had missed the movie we wanted to watch!! The other times we have tried it says the PIN number that they gave us is wrong, and it locks us out for 24 hours!! We phoned them up and they just said they'd change the PIN number to what we were trying to type in!! Which I didn't really understand, seeing as that is what it should have been in the first place!! Another problem is the now and next bar and the TV guide only rarely works!! It is very frustrating as it's nice to know whats on!! I have to say though their broadband internet service is brilliant and very cheap. The only reason why we went with NTL was because they were cheaper then Sky and we didn't have to pay for any installation.
I have had NTL for some time now. The pricing is virtually the same as Sky, but with the added bonus that if you use their TV or net service you can use their excellent phone service for the lowest cost. All together, if you get phone, Digital TV and broadband internet from then NTL easily provides the cheapest and best service. The TV is very similair to skys service, it is priced almost identically, and give or take a few useless channels youll never watch, provides the same channels. It also has similair interactive services, like TV internet, TV email and TV games. This is well worth it and a very similair service to skys digital service. I do not see how anyone could draw any distinctions between the two having had both. Any bad reviews of NTLs service also apply to skys. To find out more please read a review on sky digital, im not going to repeat what has been said 10000 times. Phone- This is good, all the services from BTs service are present, such as 1471. national/local/international calls also have a very similair pricing system to BT. Cost is also similair to BT but if you have their phone and digital TV in a package it actually works out cheaper. What I mean is this: you pay £10 for line rental with BT. you also pay £10 base for a base subscription to Sky. With NTL you still pay the base of £10 either way but you only pay it once: the base fee for having digital TV with ntl is the same £10 likewise, but it includes the phone subscription. Now thats clever strategy. By paying having identical pricing systems, if you have your digital TV and phone service from NTL you get a almost identical service and almost identical pricing, but save £10 a month. So if your going to get Digital TV them you might as well use NTL and get your phone service from them too, and in the process saving a tenner a month. nb. for exact pricing go to www.ntlworld.com these prices are accurate but wont remain accurate and up-to-date forever. Internet- Not too much to say here. If you have their other services this is £14.99 a month, much more expensive if you dont. That is the same price as services such as AOL (the most cheap, overused, useless,infuriating, liable to cut you off and plain slowest service ISP ive EVER had and ive had loads) and freeserve. But it has some VERY big advantages. Its a cable modem. In other words it is broadband. Yep, you heard right it is possibly the only affordable broadband in Britain. This means a) the modem is 128K (hire of this is included in the £14.99 a month) as opposed to your (most likely) 56 or 28.8K. This means double speed. But in reality it is more like four times the speed (im not exagurating here) because the NTL ISP, (most of the cost goes to the cable modem hire, but its already in the cable you had installed when you got digital TV) is extremly fast. It has few users and massive bandwidth. Your speed of downloading will literally go up from 2.8-8K/second, to 30K/second. If you play half-life on the net, your ping/lag will do down from 400-800 to 100-200. So all in all you cant get a better net service. There is also 512K modems available, but these are a LOT extra. and B) it means you will NEVER get cut off again (are AOL users litening) and it means you will never dial-up ever again. You are always connectected. c) and considering BTs openworld is £39.99 a month..... So all in all NTL is well worth considering. Especially the internet department.
I have been with NTL for a year and before they became NTL they were Cable & Wireless. I find the customer serivce tean good but when it comes to the engineer's that come out to sort problems out I find they only make matters worst. Like My fiance was watching the football game between England & Germany last year and NTL had come round to sort out a problem we had and he ended up losing all our channels so we miss most of the football my fiance was not very happy. They are never on time I have found I don't think once they have got to us on time. I was finding them to be expensive on there digital TV side of things and with the packages it wasn't until my fiance's mum phone us and was talking about how many channels she has and how much she pays a month that we realised we were paying way over the top for just having movies and sports plus 3 packages so my fiance phoned NTL and we now have all the channels including line rental for our phone for £43.99 a month so we are happy now. Where as before we were paying £42.00 a month for movies, sports and sky one and all music channels so we were being ripped off really. NTL have said they are now doing £43.99 as a set price for about 80 channels including the telephone line rental. We still get the odd times were our digital just goes blank and is like it for hours and we even have especially on Sky One stuttering quite a bit. Their phone charges are very good daytime 3p, evenings 2p and weekends 1p this is for nationwide.
We were one of the first families to get ntl digital but we only got it because we already had ntl and the connection charge was free. After looking at the packages available we finally decided we would get the fun pack which had all the kids channels like nick and trouble. But obviously we had to get something for the parents whih we did. i thought it was worth because you got 10 channels for only 4 pounds which was well worth it but the downside was only few programmes have subtitles and the sometimes the quality isnt too good. I had heard that Sky digital was much better with more channels and my mind began to ponder. Was ntl worth it? My dad refused to get sky saying its only tv so i was stuck with ntl. Ntl is good i suppose better than itv digital but not as good as sky. There are many free channels that you recieve and the awful customer service makes up fot that.
We first got NTL about 4 years ago now, when that oh so persuasive salesman came round and told us what a deal we were missing out on. Back then I think the only other major satellite/cable service was Sky, and digital hadn't even been invented then. We got shown the price differences between NTL (then Comtel) and Sky, and decided at £15 a month it wasn't that bad a deal. For £15 you got 'lots' of channels, but to get all the movie and sports channels you would have to pay a fair bit more. After about the first 2 weeks we realised there were only a handful of channels we watched on NTL. The other '50+' seemed to be complete rubbish, foreign or just blank channels. It would be nice to have had a nice organised channel system, that didn't go CHANNEL, BLANK CHANNEL, CHANNEL. These are the only channels that seemed to be on, Sky 1 Nickelodeon Cartoon Network MTV UKPlay BBC News 24 Occasionally, we might watch others, like UKGold or Paramount. The 3 music channels on normal NTL are certainly not the best, and it would be nice to have a few more. Other channels missing that we would liked are E4 and maybe some of the others found on Sky Digital. About 6 months ago NTL digital came out, and we got advertising, advertising and more advertising about it. They kept telling us what a better service it was, and how it was cheaper than Sky. It turns out its only cheaper that Sky if you get the whole lot, all the channels, and that?s not we wanted. NTL were very clever about how they organised their TV packages, making sure there was at least 1 channel everyone wants in each section. This means that to get the few channels listed above (+ E4 and the other music channels) you will end up paying more like £40 a month. I think it is unfair that NTL did this, and they know people will be paying over the odds to watch a lot of channels they didn't want, and they should give yo u more choice over which channels you want (more like ITV digital). Now after spending lots of money on their digital service, they will probably stop improving their original service, and that?s the one that certainly needs updating. Grr, they sure know how to rip people off!
We were one of the first households in Teesside to get ntldigital. And basically I think it is simply great value for money. Recent stats show that ntl covers 3 million households, which is certainly a highly respectable fraction of the British cable community. If you don’t know what the ntl deal is, then basically you connect to their phone service initially - £5 a month as opposed to BTs £9.25, and you get free local weekend and evening calls (subject to 4.9p connection charge), plus same call costs whether local or national. Once you are part of the ntl community, in many areas you can opt for Digital TV for a minimum price of a mere £5.75 a month. All ntl regions had basic cable, but this regions are being upgraded to cable digital. It costs a bit more than Cable (i.e. 75p a month extra for the base package) but this extra cost is well worth it… So with SkyDigital you have to pay a setup fee of £40 and the subscribe at a MINIMUM of £5 a month for 12 months. That works out as £100. And for £5 a month you don’t get much at all, just some basic channels plus Disney or whatever. However, with ntldigital you pay £5.75 a month to get the Starter Pack. And if you are very lucky you may be able to pay zero for installation, like we did. And for a mere £5.75 a month we get… Ø To make the most out of our TV license. Instead of paying £100+ / year for BBC1 and 2, we get the award winning NEWS 24, a great entertaining channel BBC CHOICE, science / art documentaries on KNOWLEDGE plus full Parliamentary coverage on PARLIAMENT. Ø Being in Teesside, we get Boro TV – the official Middlesbrough FC channel with 2 hours of programmes each night, with non-stop no-DJ music the rest of the time. Obviously this would vary depending on where you live. Ø A very good film channel “The Studio” – as part of the package you get a free films channel. It’s not quite the s ame standard of the pricey Sky Moviemax or whatever, but now and then theres some great films from the last couple of years. Through the day there are some enjoyable classic films too. Ø A free “guest” channel each month. This means we get a different channel free to view each month that is usually on subscription, in 2001 so far we’ve had The Box, Discovery Sci-Trek (April), Cartoon Network, National Geographic… Ø MTV2 – a 24 hour alternative music channel that will appeal to a considerate sector of music fans. “Alternative” includes a wide variety of music, Oasis à KoRn à Radiohead à Limp Bizkit… Ø Also Bloomberg business channel 24 hours a day, 24 hour shopping, travel channel, ITV News 24, and the great ITV2 with the likes of David Letterman. Like SkyDigital, ntl provides a great “Interactive” service that uses your phoneline to connect to the web. You get… Ø The ability to send emails, email@example.com, though it is time consuming to write mails using the remote control – a £35 remote keyboard is useful. Ø “Knowledge” – an Oxford Reference dictionary and the Hutchinson Educational Encyclopaedia available through your TV! Ø The latest news from the ITN, Guardian Unlimited and Teletext websites, including photos etc. Ø Play games such as Bingo (free to play with £200-300 cash prizes), fantasy football, fantasy shares and kids games. Ø The entire updated Argos catalogue through the TV. The ability to order pizzas and goods from a range of shops through the trustworthy credit card system. Ø Q – a comprehensive database of album reviews for hundreds of bands. Ø And LOADS more!! OK, so I’ve been talking about what you get as the basics, for paying the minimum. Many want more channels than this. This is where I think ntldigital is more u seful than Sky Digital… On Sky you are bound into getting all 49 or so extra channels which include music, lifestyle, children’s… I think this is £13 / month. Well on ntl the channels have been split into packages so you don’t have the problem of getting channels you don’t want. For example you can get 12 channels under the “news and documentaries” package for an additional £5 a month, or you can get 4 TV packs for £13 a month. The Sports package is lacking, as unlike SkyDigital you are unable to get Sky Sports Active which enables interactive viewing, changing camera angles etc. In replacement of Sky’s Box Office, there is Front Row, which is movies with similar release dates, £2.99 a film (but you cannot record them). So generally I am very pleased with ntl’s Digital TV. I have not encountered any problems, however other DooYoo users appeared to have done so. Worth giving it a shot. But research if it will be ntl or Sky that is cheaper for what you want. aT present £21/month = 2 phone lines, 100% free net access and digital TV. Channels we get: 106 - Guest channel. Last month it was the amazing Paramount Comedy, now its Bravo. 107 - Front Row Preview screen 112 - British Eurosport 114 - QVC 115 - TV Travel Shop 116 - MTV 2 117 - ITV 2 118 - The Studio (films) 120 - ChanNtl 121 - Sky News 123 - ITN News 24 124 - CNBC News 24 125 - BBC News 24 126 - BBC Choice 127 - BBC Knowledge 128 - BBC Parliament 140 - Sky One 770 - BORO TV (middlebrough fc, every game shown, soon to be made £4/month more)
We gained NTL Digital and opted for the Broadband Internet package which comes with its own super quick modem! we had to wait over 2 weeks for the modem i installed it but it wouldn't work, i queried this with NTL my local office was closed (what a suprise) i ended up with the general help people up north, i explained the probs and they did there checks there end and said it was an instalation problem and they would arrange for an engineer to visit and fix. This was over a week ago now nad i am still using the slow www connection!! Enough of that its making me depressed.. The Ntl digital via the tv is Good we will never need to rent a video ever again, there a re generally a few probs in regarde to the reception and when you call it often mention that if you are in the following areas there is a fault and we are trying to fix it, when calling you also get the message "we are experiencing a high volume of calls at the moment and will be answering your call as quickly as possible" this mesage gets very anoting when you are trying to sort things out. in general the service is pretty good i think they need to spend more time on there call services to ensure customers get through quicker and all quiries / complaints get sorted quicker.
I have been with NTLWORLD now for nine months and I just can'nt fault the service as a normal ISP service provider. But living in Scotland in a rural area I would really love to have a Broadband connection But I don'nt think this will happen in the near future as I think NTL have now cabled into the areas where they think the money can be made and are now in total disregard for the rural community. WOE IS THE TO HAVE LIGHTNING SPEED INTERNET. calandcat
NTL is trying my patience somewhat so i thought i would give you my opinion on it. I'll start with the teletext,as in we don't get ours for some reason.I quite like having teletext for the sports headlines and the football results,but now i have to log on to the net or listen to the radio for the latest news. Although net access is free you get dissconected every 2 hours which hampers internet gaming somewhat if you like that sort of thing. On demand is good for the films but they sometimes only give you a certain amount of credit if for example you have just moved house,and when that credit runs out and the person at ntl doesn't update it when you pay your bill..... Customer service is another weakness of ntl,you are kept on the phoneline for up to an hour at a time in my experience,maybe i just phone when its busy though eh?
I had been a customer of the sky satellite and phone service for about 14 months,untill i changed address and decided to try a new service.In my previous service,i had two separate phone bills.One from BT for using their line,and one from sky for using a cheap call rate number they provided,which was to be dialled before the number you required.I also had a line rental bill for the satellite services.You can imagine the horror when it came to dealing with these bills.However,after switching to NTL,i have realized a difference.They themselves offer the telephone service,and hence theres no third party to pay.Theres no line rental on the phone,so its more like a pay as you talk thing.The satellite services and family pack is also cheaper compared to other providers. In my opinion therefore,NTL is the best provider.I have no regrets at all.
Lured by the disappointment of not being able to get ADSL from BT in an ADSL enabled area, I turned to NTL. They provided me with digital television and hopefully with a choice soon of a cable modem, whilst having the chance to use NTLWorld free Internet. If only things were so simple. I rang NTL and within a week had the digital TV and phone line installed, however this was no easy task in itself as the first 2 boxes were faulty and I was left without digital TV till they came back the next day with a new box. Another problem I had is that they dug up the front garden and took the shortest route to the house and wired a black wire across our white front wall instead of digging till the sidewall to put into my bedroom. After a month they came back to sort it out properly this time but the workmanship is poor and they did not clean up after themselves properly leaving me to fill the trench in the next day. Meanwhile I have been waiting a month for this free Internet CD, this leaves me paying for phone calls for my current ISP FreeUK. Finding out that my friend ordered his CD on the NTL service and receiving the CD in a week I started going about finding where this shiny little number had gone. NTL are a bloody nightmare just look at the numbers I was redirected to before finally getting the right number: 08000929001 08000682731 08000522000 08456504092 08456506123 08009524343 One day these big corporations will realise its not about having employee’s to answer the phone calls but getting the customer service right first time it’s a simple thing that I ask for, surely you can work it out. If not why don’t they get trained monkeys to work for them. Unfortunately things do not end at that, apparently being in a Cable & Wireless area I cannot get a dial up NTL world connection, as they have not upgraded the lines? This makes no sense as I can dial up to my current provider so why not NTL? B T users can use NTL so what’s going wrong with this scenario NTL are giving every other customer the Internet connection but not their own phone line customers? Another thing I am so annoyed about is not being able to get a cable modem right away although my set top box has one in to use TV Internet with a PC Ethernet connection at the back. A friend of mine lives a mile away in an ex-CW area and he has a cable modem connection, if only they stopped wasting money on football team advertising and spent it on infrastructure to fill their customer demand. Digital Cable TV is also not flawless as it flicks on and off occasionally so this is not what I was lead to believe. The set top box software is far inferior to the SKY digital version with Open it looks cleaner, sharper and easier to use and understand. So what is going for them, well price but that’s all and it shows you pay for what you get.
