Advantages: good service
Disadvantages: none
I've been with a number of ISP's over the years but have now settled with NTL as I feel they offer the best deal. Although BT offer a similar package I found logging on with them very hard work.
I started off with NTL by purchasing a box, which gets plugged in to your phone socket, you attach the phone line to this not your modem line. This then puts a four-digit number before all telephone calls, which routes them to the NTL system rather than BT.
I then had to pay £10 up front for the month that was to follow for the 24 hours a day seven days a week internet access. My disc arrived and I logged on with no problems.
Since then I have been monitoring my phone bill on line and provided I spend £10 a month on the phone then the £10 a month for the internet access remains free last month I spent £12.40 so now I owe them £2.40. I think they hope that you will spend £20 - £30 a month with them and give them a better profit margin. Therefore in theory I pay nothing for my Internet only phone calls, which are competitive rates.
I must admit I have logged on first time every time and had good download speeds, any e-mail queries have been answered reasonably fast and I can't complain. I will only change from them when someone offers a 100% free Internet and local calls service as they do in the USA.
The only disadvantage is that we do not have cable in our area therefore I still have to pay line rental to BT - never mind one day it will all be sorted.
Summary: good
