Advantages: £15 worth free calls
Disadvantages: Too many to state
You may have heard of the package NTL are doing for those who cant get cable in their area, it involves changing your phone provider to them and having 24/7 dial up internet access for £15 per month with this they also give you £15 worth of free phone calls providing you dial a 4 digit number before the number you wish to call.
After moving to my present address I decided to take this offer as I tend to use the internet quite a lot and live in an area without cable or ADSL, everything was setup quickly and seemed fine for about 3 months...... Then they dropped a bombshell.....
They decided to change the way the dial up worked and forced everyone who had signed up to download a dialler package, being very computer literate I checked up on this package and found it had several flaws and had not been tested by an independant agency (such as verisign) for security and viruses.
I rang customer services to discuss this and they assured me everything was fine with the package and the reason they had done this was to increase the connection speed and also to enable me to connect every time I wanted. ( Although I had a fast connection and never once had an engaged tone when dialling in). I took them at their word and downloaded the package...... Next time I coonected to the internet the dialler package had to dial approx 10 times before I was able to get a connection, it then reconfigured all my settings, disabled my AntiVirus program and my Personal Firewall and finally gave me a connection speed of about half I was used to.
I rang customer services, they asked me to disconnect and reconnect which I did only to have the same problem. After numerous times of this happening I managed to speak to Technical Services who knew nothing about this but insisted it was my computer at fault.
Now as I said I am computer literate my job is a Network and Software Engineer and I have a MCSA qualification, so I checked my computer thoro
ughly and found there was nothing wrong with it, I rang cust. services and cancelled my account with them and then cancelled the Direct Debit. There followed numerous phone calls from them asking me to set up a new Direct Debit as I had signed a 12 month agreement, I agrred as they had now issued an update to the dialler package.
Now after 5 months of waiting I am still waiting for them to send me a direct debit mandate.
If I had to give anyone advice on this I would say DONT GO WITH NTL
