Advantages: Surf the web for FREE!
Disadvantages: Peak rate calls are expensive
Everyday 50 started life as Everyday 30 – and it keeps getting better! The moment Orange built a mast nearby, I bought an Everyday phone for my son who was away at school. Everyday 30 was certainly cheaper than stuffing coins into a BT callbox, and before long all the boys were buying Orange phones on the Everyday tariff. Everyday 50 was introduced at no extra cost and for 50p a day he gets 50 minutes off-peak local or national calls; additional minutes to these phones cost only 1p. With his WAP phone (Nokia 7110) he can also connect his PC to the Internet via an infrared device and – if he doesn’t phone home or a girlfriend – surf or email free for 50 minutes! His WAP phone is configured to connect to the Orange WAP portal through Orange @ 5p a minute peak and through a portal in Germany (via Cable & Wireless in London) for free or 1p a minute off peak – this is less than many people pay for fixed line connections! Okay, the modem speed is only 9,600kbps, but this is plenty fast enough for POP-3 mail and well-written web sites. I liked it so much that I bought one for myself! Now I use my old phone during the day and Everyday 50 off peak – I ring FRIENDS & FAMILY during the evening and at weekends – and it hardly costs a bean. Eat your heart out BT!

- 08/10/00 John,
An interesting response to my thoughts on Orange! I'm glad you
are happy with them but would be interested to know how you
would resolve the problems I had? Surely half a dozen ignored
polite telephone calls and several ignored letters would get
even the mildest customer a little uppity - wouldn't it?
Cheers for reading, anyway.
