Advantages: 1825 text messages for a year working out at less than one pence!
Disadvantages: No rollover messages and you must have credit
Having changed back to ?pay as you go? from a contract phone I remembered reading about an offer on Ciao called Orange Out Here. After scanning the Orange website on several occasions without success I finally made a call to customer services who helped me out. Orange Out Here has now changed and is officially called Orange Text Saver. The original service offered Orange ?pay as you go? customers the option to pay a one off fee of £15 to get five free text messages a day for the rest of the time that they had the phone?too good to be true I hear you say, which is probably the reason that they changed the offer to the Text Saver option. The new Text Saver option is similar in that it offers Orange pay as you go customers five free texts messages a day but at the cost of £19.99 a year. They also throw in £5 worth of free call time which means that you are paying £15 for the equivalent of 1825 text messages a year. One downfall of this offer is that the text messages do not rollover. So if you text 1 person on one day and nine the next you will end up paying for the extra four messages you sent on the second day, at the original rate set when you bought the phone. Another downfall, and perhaps the most unfair, is that to use the free text messages you must have credit on your phone. This is bad because when I first saw this offer I thought it would be great to use when I haven?t topped up my balance, not so I?m afraid. The one thing I try to do is always save a couple of pence on my phone ? not enough to make a call but allows you to send the free messages every day! Overall to determine how good this offer is you really need to take into account how many text messages you send and on what time scale. To get this offer you need to be on Orange ?pay as you go? anyway so if you estimate how many text messages you send a day and multiply this by the cost per message you should get a good idea. Remember that minus the free £5 call time you get with this d
eal then you are only paying £15. This offer is actually justified to anyone who sends just one message every other day, of course so long as you have credit on a regular basis to use the service. As someone who sends a ridiculous amounts of text messages, this is an excellent deal for me. The fact that you need talk time is a bit annoying but a small price to pay for an offer that saves me over fifty pence a day, with the text messages working out at less than one pence! If you are interested in signing up you can do so by entering any of the Orange outlets in the UK, phoning the Orange Shop on 0500 178178 or visiting the online shop at www.shop.orange.co.uk/ Like me you will feel a bit gutted for missing out on the original deal that was just a one off payment but I?m pretty sure that if you do your sums you?ll find you?ll be quid?s in with this offer too and worth checking it out.

- 06/02/04 I'm on contract with Orange. I get free minutes but not text. I have opted for the text bundles which save me money! |

- 05/02/04 I don't bother to text very much, but a good deal for those who do. I am rather slow when I text and am impressed by these fast button pushers. |
