Advantages: Great customer service and deals
Disadvantages: none for me
When the new T-mobile shop opened in the shopping centre next to my office I went down with a friend to investigate the "excellent 20% off deals" ... I wasn't expecting to find very much if I'm honest. My mobile at the time was nearly 3 years old and pay as you go with another company. I was only using about £10 - £15 of credit a month and a varied mix of texts and calls so I had never gone pay monthly as I had never found one that would work for me and not cost me any more money. My fiend jumped at the chance to go onto a Flext pay monthly deal. It was the Flext 25 and she was getting a free phone and a 20% discount for the rest of the time she's with T-mobile on that contract. Sounded quite a good deal and so I looked into it further for myself. I was more interested in the Flext 35 deal as it would give me £180 worth of credit per month for £35 less the 20% discount. As I stood with my friend whilst she got her phone and everything sorted out I was thinking more and more about doing the same.
I ended up going for it. The new phone was the thing that kept swaying me and I thought after the 18 months if I wasn't happy then I'd just go back to pay as you go. The sales guy told me about the slightly more expensive deal to see if I'd go for it and thankfully when I said no that was it. I have encountered pushy sales people before but he was perfect! Tell the customer but understand the meaning of no! It only took 20 minutes to sort everything out and the phone was handed over to me that day. I was like a kid during Christmas for the next week as I hadn't had a new phone for ages and I had gotten the newest Nokia of that time.
Within the first two weeks I had my phone on the bed with me and whilst I was sleep I had knocked the internet button! £75 worth of internet! The customer service centre really understood my problem and saw that I hadn't had any activity whilst online so they agreed to wipe most of the charge. I only ended up paying £20 thankfully. Needless to say I changed the buttons on the front of the phone and keep it locked when I'm not using it.
The next two years went fine. The only trouble I had was a weird 5 digit number texting me but one call to customer service took care of that and the charges from those texts were recalled from my bill. I received a call from the customer service centre a month before my contract was up by a very friendly lady asking if I had been happy with the service. I said yes and she then began to say that it was renewal time. I was now faced with the choice of a new phone or £10 off my bill every month. I asked if I would still have my 20% discount and the answer was yes. I had been bought a new phone for my birthday by my boyfriend and so with no hesitation I went for the £10 a month off. It was in this same phone call I was asked if I would like to stop getting paper bills. I was happy to say no as T-mobile send you a text every now and then letting you know what your credit looks like. Fewer things for me to file too!
Old habit of having pay as you go for so long I do tend to worry during days when I send a lot of texts or am on the phone for a long period of time. I'm not sure why I still think about that but I soon remember that I needn't bother.
Scary to think but another two years have past! Where they went I haven't a clue! That call came again. I now had the choice again of a new phone or £10 off my monthly bill. I was a bit cheeky and asked if I this £10 off a month was in addition to the one I had acquired last time? Unfortunately it's either keep your £10 off a month or go back to the old bill and get a new phone. I kept my phone as I love it and I didn't want to pay any more money in these harsh times. Every penny counts!
Over the G20 summit the mobile networks went down for some time and to be honest I had forgotten what was going on and thought my phone was playing up. I was in the town centre and went into the T-Mobile shop. I was met by a guy who seemed prepared for my query. He noticed a symbol on my phone that showed I had tried to send a text and it was stuck in my outbox and he got rid of it for me. He also noticed that my keypad was a bit worn and told me that there were some spares if I wanted one (free of charge), and put it on for me.
Aside from some random service messages that came through at odd hours in the morning I have been really happy with the service from T-Mobile and am happy to stay with them for years to come.
I looked at the website just now and I can't seem to find the Flext 35. I can only find 40 and up so I presume the £35 and under have turned into differently named deals. I think they are now called Combi deals. Check it out for yourself at http://www.t-mobile.co.uk
Review update:
Oh dear! My mobile has met an unfortunate end after taking a bath in Southern Comfort & Coke! I haven't currently got insurance on my phone so I phoned up T-Mobile to see if there was anything I could do. I'm right in the middle of my 18 month contract and as I expected T-Mobile said there was nothing they could or would do and I would just have to go out and buy and handset! Not overly pleased about that but oh well ... I went out to the shops and spent a day looking in every phone shop in Bluewater shopping centre. My last stop was at the FoneHouse / T-Mobile shop. I explained my story to the guy there. After a few giggles about how my phone stopped working he said for me to give him a moment. He went to use the phone and came back 2 minutes later saying that he'd worked things out to give me the same contract I've always had but starting the 18 months over from today. With that I would get £5 off a month instead of the £10 I had been getting before and a free phone! That is what I had hoped for from the start so you can imagine how happy I was! The shop guy worked everything out for me and I was walking away with my new phone within 20 minutes. Why it took me going into the shop to get such a good deal I don't know but I'm glad I did! I was about to spend about £200!!!!

- 03/07/09 I have read this 3 times now - and am being very thick - but I have to ask - was the £35 per year, or a one off payment for 18 months? |
