Advantages: Free broadband if you have their phone package

Disadvantages: Where do I start?

We've just signed up for Talk Talk broadband to go with our Talk Talk telephone line. I will freely admit that in the broadband stakes I am unfaithful! Yes I tried 'em all (nearly), so I know what other provider services are like. I can't say we have gotten off to a good start. This makes me seriously worried about what is going to happen if there is a real problem with the service.

We've had the phone service for just under a year. It has been fairly satisfatory. The package is reasonabley priced £24 per month if we don't use it to phone mobiles (try explaining that to a teenager) or premium numbers.

So we thought we'd sign up for the free broadband service. You'd think that since we already use their phone service it would be a simple fast addition. Wrong! Talk Talk quoted a "go live" date about a month later than the order date. They tried to charge for this on the very next bill even though we hadn't even received the router. They charged VAT at the old 17% rate instead of 15%. That was the shape of things to come.

The " go live " date came and went. The website informed us that the service was live, no sign of the router. Numerous unfruitful phone calls later, it was that revealed that the "go live" date is only an estimate! The router arrived about a week later.

Then today it happened - We went live!

Now we know where we stand. No matter what is discussed, promised or estimated, none of it will be written down so that the next person can follow up. Any dates given by Talk Talk are only estimated.

Thats alright so long as we know! :-(

Summary: Alright if you are not in a hurry for your broadband

I didn't have any problems with my "go live" date, but I must admit that Talk Talk's customer service over the phone is pretty awful.

If you have any more problems with your broadband go to the TalkTalk members forum (http://talktalkmembers.c om/). It's a site run by TalkTalk where you can talk to other members and also sort problems out with actual useful (for once) customer service people who post on the forums. In my experience these guys rush your problems through the system in no time at all.

I had a speed problem and all it took was a simple post in the forums for one of the community staff to change a setting. My speed was back to normal in ten minutes. If I had done this through the phone it would have cost me and probably wouldn't have worked, so it's something to consider if you have another problem :-)
