Disadvantages: Terrible service, terrible customer service
I had Tiscali phone and broadband service for two years before switching to sky, due to an ongoing problem with the broadband signal. Basically the 'packets' kept dropping at a certain point along their route, which basically means that the signal was dropping somewhere and causing my internet to stop working every few minutes. We ended up buying 3 routers, none of which solved the problem so we called Tiscali.
The customer service was terrible, they insisted it was a problem with BT (which it wasn't, BT referred us back to them), and it was annoying because the connection wasn't good, the people had very thick accents and were just reading from a script. My two very computer savvy friends got increasingly frustrated with them as they only recommended very basic soultions such as rebooting the router, which we were doing constantly anyway as it was the only way it could work.
My friends spent a lot of time tracking down the problem and eventually tracked it down to the exact address in America of where the problem lay. They then called up Tiscali who refused to admit there was any problem (based on their access to official problems) - did they think we made the address up or something?? I don't know. Since then we switched to Sky broadband and have had no access problems whatsoever. The Internet has been very fast and reliable, so it was clearly a problem at their end since the router is fine, my laptop is fine, the BT line is fine.
A shame they don't pay more attention to customers' needs and wants even after multiple calls.
Summary: Avoid!!
