Advantages: price, unlimited calls & bandwith
Disadvantages: brondband slow and connection problems, poor customer service
I used tiscali as my broadband isp and call provider a while back now. I signed up mainly because of the price being around £19.99 including unlimited calls and unlimited 8 meg broadband with no cap on bandwith. I did not have my line rental with them.
I found no real problems with the call side of their product but I did have a faulty line once. Apparently some engineer messed around with the exchange affecting the call quality of my line but Tiscali were somewhat helpful though obviously had to rely on BT to actually sort the problem out according to them.
I did however have some problems with the broadband. The speed I was getting was probably about 4 meg initially though if tiscali made any changes at their end I would notice a huge drop in the speed. There were many ocassions when due to tiscali's so called 'maintenance upgrades' I would find a fall in my broadband connection. My router also had some drop outs in connection every now and again.
When I would email tiscali they would just send back a standard response though they did always email. Also I called them on a few ocassions and their call centre is located in India. The technical help offered was very basic and they just went through the script - I kept telling them the problem is from your end but they insisted it must be my computer or my settings (even though I had changed nothing and 5 minutes ago the internet would be working). I had to resolve most technical problems myself - not very good customer service.
Anyhow I cancelled as soon as my 12 months was up and moved to Sky. Tiscali cancelled straight away and stopped billing me, they also provided the MAC code via email fairly promptly. They did try to convince me to stay by providing a wireless router and discount but I heard Sky's broadband was much more reliable and I also had Sky TV anyhow so it would work out better for me to move.
Summary: better isp's are out there
