Advantages: Cheap call rates

Disadvantages: Rubbish network coverage in rural areas

I have used Virgin Mobile for the past 5 years since I once again wanted a new phone and was persuaded by a friend to give Virgin a try. (I went through a phase of changing my mobile every six months either because I got bored of the phone I had or I discovered that the network I was using was complete rubbish)

At the time of first signing up to Virgin Mobile I lived in Essex and worked in London so the issue of network coverage didnt cross my mind. I never had a problem with it and was always able to obtain a signal no matter where I was, I only had a problem when I moved to Southend and worked in a building that contained a lot of glass, for some reason this affected the ability to receive a signal at times and I would often have to leave the office and go out into the communal areas to make a call or send a text.

I now live in North Dorset and for the first time in 5 years am seriously considering changing my network, I struggle to receive a signal at times where I live and in the nearby large town which is situated in a low valley I fail to get a signal at all, nothing, zilch, nada. At work I have to leave the office and stand in the middle of the car park to make a call which is a bit rubbish if it's a cold day or raining.

That aside the the customer service is good and the call rates I pay are very low too. At the time of signing up they had a brilliant deal where you can monthly but only for the calls/texts you make, there is no line rental. At times I hardly use my phone so much so that last month my bill was 51p! bargain.

I would recommend Virgin Mobile but only if you like in an urban area or a big town/City, in the sticks you'll get nowhere.

Summary: Ok but nothing special

From memory, Virgin use the T-Mobile network and that can be a bit patchy in rural areas. I'd recommend 02 if you do decide to switch.
