Advantages: Only Cable service can be faster than BT
Disadvantages: Very poor customer service and speed reduced by half when viewing streaming sites
My Wife and I have been using cable for years now and before Virgin took over we were fans of Telewest. My review will concentrate on a few but important issues that cause me and probably countless customers frustration with the Virgin service.
In my experience I have found that the service with Virgin has a lot to be desired. You contact the call centres and even before you get through to someone its not unusual to wait quite a lot time listening to music before and on many occasions someone hangs up before you speak to anyone.
I have worked in a call centre before when its almost home time you don't want to get stuck on a call so you press the mute button and leave the call connected so the customer eventually hangs up.
The other issue I have with Virgin is once you hit a small threshold they reduce your connection speed by half. OK I understand why they are doing this but this effects anyone who uses BBC I Player online and any music or video streaming sights . I believe that Virgin also cut your connection to specific sights such as I Player as I have the 10 meg connection you would think that the speed would be better on sights such as you tube or I player but no it would seem to be very similar to the 2 Meg connection I had before.
Both the speed issue and the customer service are a major factor for me when choosing an ISP its such a shame that Virgin let me down in both areas
I really loved Telewest before Virgin took over now I have slow speeds below par customer service and no other choice unless I purchase a BT landlines. Would I recommend Virgin probably not however I probably would recommend Sky
Summary: I have been with Virgin for years only because getting a BT line is so expensive dont bother

- 06/11/09 We are with Virgin now after having the service installed originally by Cabletel, who were then taken over by :ntl. Things are far better now with Virgin. We're regularly getting over 20Mb on our 10Mb broadband and have had as high as 26Mb. Upload speed is a pain though, at just 0.5Mb. |

- 03/11/09 I also have virgin and find them ok. Just do a speed test from time to time to check what you are actually getting. It very much depends on the time of day as to the speed you get but on the whole I am satisfied with them. I would agree about the customer service though. |
