Advantages: Connection / cheap phone calls
Disadvantages: Loss of unmetered access
I am regretably cancelling my account with World Online in the next few days. I have been with them since May 1999 when they were screaming net / Localtel.
I didnt believe that they could do unlimited access for free, but much to my surprise they did. Their bandwidth and speed left a lot to be desired but over the months their service improved with the addition of new servers, increasing bandwidths and more upgrades besides.
Certainly by the latter half of last year I found that their service surpassed most others. I spend many many hours each week online in the chat rooms and found it quite funny that people logged on with compuserve, aol or BT kept getting booted without notice whereas I only lost connection at the end of my two hour time out, which was from xmas extended to three hours.
The trouble was that because screaming net had such a poor start, partly caused by the huge bottlenecks in BT's speed of processing requests to move accounts to Localtel, that it gave the service a very poor reputation.
I tried many times to tell people that the service was excellent buit few believed me, even though they were having cionnection problems and I was not. Not only was I getting unmetered access and cheap phone calls, but I was also getting extremely good transfer speeds.
Now, because of BT not unbundling the local loops to other operators, World Online, along with many others, are having to withdraw their unmetered access. The amount I use the internet this equates to a rise in cost of £60-£80 a month so I am forced to look elsewhere.
The only one I have found will cost me £19.99 a month for full unmetered and no cut-off time but relies on you having a BT line. I am forced therefore to go back to BT for my phone ( although I dont make calls with my landline ) much as I hate doing so, but if World Online ever return to a fully unmetered service then I for one will immediately rejoin them. World Online's ISP service was / is second to no
ne and any stories that you may have heard about it's past shoudl be ignored.
I recommend World Online to anyone because it is everything you could ever need, cheap phone calls, excellent connection and very helpful staff (although phone lines can be very busy).
I hope they can return to unmetered very soon and get back the customers that BT are forcing them to lose.
