We find it convenient and space-saving to have a combined telephone and answering machine which is wall mountable. The telephone itself features 13 memories plus the usual recall and re-dial facilities, and is compatible with BT and cable networks. It is white and attractively shaped, with large buttons and a ringer volume control. Unfortunately, it does not have anywhere on the phone to keep a record of the numbers you have stored in memory, which for me makes it an unusable feature.

The answerphone is fully digital and you can use either the pre-recorded answering messages or your own ones. I would not say that the recordings are 100% clear but it is more than adequate. At least the volume can be controlled and there is no tape to worry about.

There are visual and audio prompts as to how many messages you have and whether the answerphone is on or off etc. Each message comes with a recording of the time and date that it was received, and can be accessed remotely from another phone, using a pin number.

As well as listening to messages, it is possible to operate any of the other functions of the machine by remote access, for example deleting old messages or switching from one recorded answer to the other . This is not too complicated, and involves pressing the relevant activating numbers on the phone you dial in from. A useful feature here is the time saving ring, which means that if you dial in and the phone rings more than twice, you know there are no messages and can hang up straight away, saving time and call cost. One small niggle is that the activating numbers have to be remembered or noted down and carried around. Our previous answerphone came with a handy credit card sized reminder slip which conveniently fitted into a purse or wallet.

All in all this is a good basic telephone/answering machine: reasonably priced, effective and neat, it is far better than the BT model which we bought for £10 more and had to ret
urn as faulty.
