We purchased this as our first house phone. It cost around £50 and hasn't let us down yet.
It comes as a main base unit with phone and built in answering machine and a second separate phone with its own charging station. The second phone only requires a power socket, not a second telephone socket so it can be put anywhere. The phones have very clear screens which display the time and date and are backlit so you can see what you're doing in the dark.
There is an alarm and a phonebook built in, we had to put the phonebook entries separately into both of them which wasn't great. It has an intercom so you can call the second phone, which is handy when you lose one and it has speaker phone function which can be really useful when you're in the middle of cooking/washing up and you get a call which can't wait, but be warned this does drain the battery. The ringtones aren't great but there are a few to choose from and you can have different ones on each of the handsets.
There is a digital display on the answering machine base which flashes to let you know how many messages you have and there is a little light on the phones so you can tell on the second handset too. It took me a while to figure it out but you can listen to messages on the phones as well as the main base.
I have a 65ft garden and can sit at the end of it and not loose signal. The clarity on the phone is great and I have had no problem with fuzzing or crackling on the line like you do with some cordless handsets.
The only downside with it is the answering machine message. A very well spoken and not very friendly sounding lady advises 'This is an answering machine, please leave your message after the tone.' I know I could record my own message but I think that would probably be even worse!
Overall this was a great buy and I would thoroughly recommend it.
