Advantages: easy to use, good battery life
Disadvantages: occasionally crackly
When it came to choosing a new house phone the only feature which was essential was that it was cordless. Sharing a fixed line phone with a teenager is no fun and we both needed the option to take the phone to another room to talk in private. I was planning on buying a basic phone but a Tesco Clubcard offer allowed me to buy the Phillips ID5551 in exchange for my vouchers, the price at that time was £60 but it is available cheaper now.
This model is a combined phone and answering machine with a number of extra features, some of which work better than others. These include a 200 number directory, a choice of polyphonic ring tones, call management including call waiting, speakerphone and alarm clock. Many of the extra functions like caller ID are subscription services so I have not used them, others like sending SMS messages I have never bothered to work out how to use them. I tend to only use the alarm clock which is nice and loud and I like the fact I can set three alarms a few minutes apart.
I love the way the phone looks, it is sleek and shiny and black but unfortunately prone to collecting fingerprints. The handset is big enough to feel sturdy in your hand without being clunky and the overall small size of the unit means that it sits on my desk without taking up too much room. It is a nicely built unit which looks modern and feels high quality. The handset frequently gets left lying around the house and the loud paging function is a godsend when I am searching for my phone and I can hear it when it has been left in another room. The screen to navigate through the menus is fairly small but the text is clear and easy to read. Battery life is really good with the phone easily going a few days between charges even when it is used heavily. Even when the battery has run flat I have been able to use the handset again after sitting it on the base station for as little as half an hour.
I have always found the phone easy to use with simple menus and the phonebook being easy to access. Call clarity is generally excellent but for some reason the phone gets a bit crackly sometimes for no reason. The range of the handset is good with me able to use it within all rooms of the house and in the garden too without losing a signal. The hands free speaker option is also really clear.
The answering machine works well and gives a nice clear recording with up to 30 minutes of messages able to be stored. I normally leave the machine turned off but it is nice to know it is there if I want to use it.
Overall I am happy with my phone which is ideal for family use with only a couple of small niggles making it less than perfect and at the current price of only £30 on Amazon it is a real bargain.
Summary: a good choice
