Advantages: Good price, easy to use and robust.
Disadvantages: No back lighting and dubious hands free function.
Due to mobility issues I have several cordless phones dotted around the house as well as a couple of corded ones for when we get the inevitable power cuts in bad weather out here in the sticks. This Tesco unit is one of a few that I have and it is a decent enough all rounder. It has most of the features and functions that you would expect in a basic cordless phone with no real frills.
The phone itself and the base unit are reasonably attractive with a shiny black plastic casing and base. It is unobtrusive and small enough to tuck away onto a shelf or a nook somewhere without getting in the way of other things. It is smart enough not to look too ugly if on display anywhere in the house too.
The unit is well built and quite robust (having been dropped a fair few times ) and it looks like it would last a long time.
The numbers are easy enough to find and read and spaced far enough apart that mistakes are few. This would also make it a good phone for somebody with a visual impairment. The digital display is acceptable in size and quality but unfortunately there is no back light function around the numbers which is something that I would really enhance this product.
The phone features a 20 name and number memory and last 3 number redial function which is fairly minimal but I hardly use these functions. There is a choice of 9 ringtones which are acceptable but nothing to write home about and a hands free option which has an adjustable volume. The hands free is a useful concept but it does not work that well unfortunately. Any conversations that I have had using hands free usually end up with either myself or the participant saying "eh" or "what" a lot.... so I do not bother with this feature either.
The phone bumph states that it can hold its charge for "up to" ten hours... and I have found the battery life to be pretty good when compared to other cordless phones. However I have not managed to test it for ten hours talk-time yet ! The standby life of the battery is up to 100 hours.
There is a 20 call log capacity which is helpful, especially if like me you forget numbers easily. One of the reasons for the good battery life is probably due to the phone having limited features and no back lighting, so I guess that is one benefit to having a basic phone.
It is easy enough to input numbers into storage and also to edit this info but this is more to do with me knowing how this works with other phones rather than due to quality of instructions which are somewhat complicated and not entirely clear.
The instructions state that there is a 50 metre range (indoor) but I have taken it outside to work on my car etc and had no problems with dropped calls or diminishing signal. The sound on the phone is good and clear and I have no trouble hearing any conversations even internationally when using it without the hands free option.
The phone is a good replacement phone with basic features and just enough bells and whistles to make it user friendly. There are improvements that could be made in the hands free option and in adding a lit display but these things do not make me appreciate the phone any less. I bought it as a workhorse and it is just that.
There is no pager option from the base should you lose the phone handset so be careful not to mislay it ( like I do often)
This is a neat little phone with a smart casing. So far there have been no real technical issues with it apart from the wibbly hands free option. I would recommend this as a second phone or a spare.
Summary: Basic but useful little phone at a decent price.
