Sony KDL-40HX703
by craigyb69
Had this TV about 2 1/2 years now and loved every minute.
Unlike many LCD TVs this has an all glass front giving it a wonderful picture and an elegant look even when turned off.
Ambient light sensor and 200hz motion flow are superb, particularly the latter for tennis and football....a 50hz TV looks so awful after ... this!
There are loads of ports be they usb, hdmi or network.
The picture be it from freeview, bluray or PS3 is excellent.
A major attraction is the internet connectivity, to name a few I have youtube, BBC iplayer, 5 on demand and lovefilm. Still waiting for them to include the itv and C4 players.... come on Sony!
The remote is intuitive and easy to use and shared across a number of models. Likewise the onscreen menu is the same as used on the PS3 so any Sony fan will have no problem getting to grips with it.
All in all a very smart and elegant smart TV! Read the complete review |

Toshiba 40BL702B
by jlaker1992
Introduction:
For a while now I have been looking for a new television for my bedroom, I have a large wall infront of my bed and I have always wanted a large tele to fill the wall and give me something to look at when I am tucked up in bed. I went looking in all the high street stores and this tele seemed to be very common, I ... spotted it in argos, curries etc. when I got home I did a little more research into the tele and discovered it was cheapest at tesco. I went down to my local store to check it out and it was my lucky day, they were taking down ex display televisions and selling them off at cheap prices, I managed to grab a bargain and also recieved the best tele I believe I have ever owned. I will now go into more detail on this tele and explain why it is so good and worth getting!
Price:
Currently this costs £399 me argos and curries, yet tesco are selling it for £299. The ex display version I picked up was £240 which is very good. The price for this tele differs where ever you look. It is available on ebay and on amazon and I have noticed the price fluctuates heavily from day to day on this model. If you purchase from tesco you also recieve clubcard points which can come in handy for those day out trips or can go towards meal tokens from tesco rewards. I would definately shop around on this tele because you have a high chance of saving money on different websites, as it is not one of the brand new models out, it's available discounted in many places. Overall I am happy with the price I paid and would be more than happy to pay full price for This. It is worth £400 for definate.
Technical information:
This television is full HD 1080p which means it has a very clear image. It is 50hz which means it can keep up with fast moving tele programmes well. There are also four hdmi sockets which come in handy as I have my sky box plugged in aswell as a playstation and Apple TV! There are also two USB ports which are useful for charging phones and putting a memory stick in the tele to show your photos to people. This tele has an energy rating of "b" and this is by far not the worst you will see. The newer Toshiba models are all coming in as "a" rated, but this still is energy efficient and will not break the bank if used a lot. The television has 2 speakers which are stereo, there is also a headphone socket which can come in use occasionally. The tele has inbuilt free view which means there is no need to have an additional free view box attached to the tele, you can also view a 7 day TV guide which is useful when planning what to watch of a weekend or evening. All in all, the technical side to this television is appealing, plus add all those features to a full HD led tele you are surely on to a winner! The tele also comes with a stand which can be used to place the tele on tables etc, I never used the stand and out the tele straight up on the wall, the stand is good looking though and if you do not want to put yours on the wall this is excellently made and looks sturdy, yet not bulky and distasteful.
The looks:
The television is very slimline which is stylish and allows you to attach it to a wall bracket with ease! The screen looks great as there is only a vey small edge around the screen meaning all focus can be put onto the tele. When you view this from the side you can see how thin it is. It's a wonder how they make them so thin these days. This television looks stylish and is not bulky in any way shape or form. Just a good looking piece of tech. This is one of the reasons I was first attracted to this tele, Toshiba have worked hard to make a good looking tele which competes with the stylish LG's and Samsungs which seem to dominate the market at the moment. It's a very bold tele and looks stylish at all times, its a very modern looking television which suits my flat well as that was the style I was going for.
Any good?:
This tele has a stunning image and is great for watching films. When using the high definition programmes you can really see the difference and see why the tele is so good. I am also so impressed with the sound quality this can produce. For something so thin, the sound quality is out of this world. It will fill the room and leave you shocked and how good it sounds, it plays music well and listening the music channels is no issue at all. Watching sports on the tele is magnificent! It keeps up with play well, anything fast moving can be handled well and this is a bonus for me as I am a huge sports fan and my evenings mostly consist of watching sport on the tele. Overall I can't fault the tele, even the remote is stylish and easy to use. The instructions for the television are simple to follow and even beginners will not find it hard to cope with the instructions.
Overall:
I am nothing but impressed with this, I paid an excellent price, but as I said before, I would be more than happy to pay the full price as it is that good. It has all the bells and whistles I want and plenty of room for hdmi inputs etc. the actual quality of the image portrayed on the screen is incredible and very clear, it's bright and colourful and everything I want in a tele. It's very easy to put on a bracket, I have it on a swivel bracket and it looks great, it's a light tele and not too heavy to lift. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a large tele and one that is good quality and from a trusted brand. I have nothing bad to say about Toshiba as a brand and this tele really promotes the company well. In the past I have always steered clear of a Toshiba product as I did not know much about them and they are not advertised as widely as other companies are these days. The television has excellent features which all add up to make this a 5 star product, I can't recommend this highly enough. Toshiba have made a good one here, keep an eye out for it and as I said before, there are always cheaper places to buy teles than just the high street stores, have a look online and shop around, don't accept the first price you see for this product as there is money to be saved. Thanks for reading my review, I hope it has helped you out and informed you well on this model. Josh - jlaker1992 Read the complete review |

Toshiba 40HL933G
by FrostBite
For two years I spent my life moved out of home with a very small old style TV VCR from my teenage years which had served its purpose well from the late 90's. Now becoming and adult I felt I needed to keep up with the game and wanted a TV a little more substantial (with the ability to actually see the whole screen and not a cut out) and ... flatter to fit in my living room.
Buying a TV to me is similar to buying a car, I don't want to pick the first thing I see as it is somewhat of an investment. So I began the hunt, looking in Argos, catalogues and all the big name electrical stores gauging the best prices and value for money. I decided unpon Toshiba as I knew the brand and felt that knowing the brand gave me some peace of mind for relaibility.
Toshiba is a Japanese engineering company founded in 1939 and focus upon appliances, digital products, electronic devices and social infrastructure.
My budget was limited to around £550 so I knew my choices would be restricted. I went around the electrical shops to get an idea of size, although you have to be careful when in showrooms as their huge TV walls make even a 50" TV look small. I took tape measures and had to remember my limited unit space and then sockets required for digiboxes, games consoles and DVD players.
Once in the stores I find that I generally get ignored in favour of the person in a suit. Make sure you know your stuff as the sales assistants I came across only gave me the basic sales jargon such as hertz power and mega pixels; I feel they sell you what they have been informed to sell and not what you need!
Once I had seen this particular model I then hunted through all shops and internet sites that stocked it to find the best value for money. I found this particular model on Amazon for £499.99 and this was the best offer. I was naturally dubious about ordering a TV online as I feared being sent an empty box or risking the item being damaged in transit. However, I was pleasantly suprised that the item turned up without a knock on the box, and when I opened it I found the TV so well packed I could barely get it out of the box. The TV is heavy (about 16kg) so I would recommend two people to lift it but I managed myself to move it around. I have only stood it on a unit so cannot review how easy it is to wall mount, but for setting up all you do is plug in, flick a switch and the TV updates its freeview automatically.
The speakers are built in and 'invisible' so you don't have the unsightly view. They are good quality but if you require the cinema effect you would need surround sound. There is also the LED backlight which is not very noticeable when the TV is at an angle stood on the TV unit but I'm sure it would have an effect when wall mounted having a backdrop to project onto.
The TV comes with a remote, 2x HDMI slots for DVD players or Sky boxes; 1x USB to stream movies etc; 1x RCA composite; 1x scart for the old DVDs or games consoles, 1x VGA; 1x coaxial audio and 1x headphones.
So far I have found the LED screen to be great especially with the HD channels. There is currently no screen burn which was previously found on the plasma models. I currently have found no issues with the TV as it has enough space for all my gadgets, it has a fab picture and tuning is easy. It does everything I need it to do and looks smart in the room.
