A big, beautiful television
Member Name: cornishchic
Advantages: Fab picture, looks nice, lots of ports
Disadvantages: Sound isn't that great, doesn't go very loud
When I first moved into my own place almost four years ago now, I relied on family and friends to hand down old bits and pieces to furnish it. One thing I was given by my nan was an old big back television, it wasn't even widescreen but beggars can't be choosers! I tend to save up Amazon vouchers for Christmas presents and last year I had some left over so decided it was time to update my old fashioned television. When Amazon were doing their black Friday deals week they had a nice modern television at a good price so I snapped it up to replace my old hand me down television.
The television in question was this Digihome LED42983FHD, it had a full price of £330 but as it was on offer it had £100 off and cost me just £230. Luckily I had enough Amazon credit to cover most of this and put a little bit of cash to it too. I was shocked after checking Amazon to see it is now on sale for a whooping £725, after a quick Google I couldn't find it available to buy from anywhere else.
As it's a 42 inch television, the box it came in was massive. It was well packaged with polystyrene surrounding it so it couldn't move around in the box and get damaged. It was also covered in plastic to stop marks or damage of any sort. I was mega excited when the box arrived that I went to assemble it by myself. Luckily my daughter was at nursery so I didn't have to worry about her getting in the way but due to the huge size of television there was no way I could have managed it by myself so drafted in the help of my next door neighbour. We managed to get the screen out and attach it to the base without encountering any problems; this process was simple and only involved a few screws. Despite a few screws not sounding enough to hold a television screen on to the base, it holds it really well and the screen is safe and secure.
After plugging the television in for the first time, I remember the set up was relatively easy to get through with it explaining every step as you go through it. The television comes with freeview built in and it searches for channels automatically through the set up. The overall look of the television is quite standard having a black stand and being black in colour. It has a 42 inch screen and is quite sleek looking.
----- I'm going to let you know now that I am not really a huge fan of technology and all the mumble jumble that goes with it is complete gobbledegook to me so my apologises if you can't understand my understanding of all the different aspects! -----
The TV has a variety of different ports on the back which makes it easy to connect whatever you want to it. There are 2 scart ports, 4 HDMI ports, VGA port and also a port for USB's. I'm only currently using one scart for my DVD player and a HDMI port for the xbox so there are more than enough ports for my needs. It is easy to switch from the TV to whatever device you want to use by pressing the source button on the remote control, this brings up the list of different ports, just select which one you want and away you go, it's not rocket science, even for me.
While we are on the subject of remotes, this one is quite ordinary looking being mainly black in colour with the four coloured buttons (red, green, yellow and blue), each button has light grey coloured text on it so it stands out against the black of the buttons. None of these have faded due to use over the 6 months I've been using it. It features all the normal buttons, numbers, volume and program up and down, EPG, mute, info etc etc. The remote can be used from far away and it doesn't need to be pointing at the television for it to register.
The television boasts that it is has 1080p full HD resolution, I think this is something to do with the picture quality (sorry for my vagueness!) but as I don't have any compatible HD ready devices to use I can't tell you how well that works. This TV is also an LED television opposed to the LCD apparently LED's are superior to LCD's but again, I know nothing about these so can't make a comparison for you. What I can tell you is that the picture quality, in my eyes, is fantastic, it is rarely grainy and the picture is crisp and clear. I wouldn't say the colours are the brightest I've seen on a television but this isn't a problem for me. I have no problems in watching it in daylight or in the dark and find that the picture is just as good when it is dark as when it is light. I find it easy to pick up all the little details and when gaming through this television I don't have any problems in missing things.
The sound and volume on the television is ok. The volume goes up to 63 and I usually find leaving it on between 15-20 is adequate for watching television and slightly louder for gaming. Even at full whack on 63 I wouldn't say the sound is all that loud, I certainly think it could go louder. I have this little thing that when I'm doing housework I have to listen to Kiss FM quite loud to keep me motivated and I wouldn't say the quality of the sound is all that great when I go that, the bass isn't fantastic and it does sound a little weird, but at the same time I still feel motivated so it can't be that bad.
As far as energy consumption is concerned, this television uses less than 1 watt of energy in standby mode, I have this thing where I always have to turn plugs off if they aren't in use so this doesn't matter to me, but if you do leave it on standby then you can be assured it isn't using too much energy. When the television is on it uses 138 watts and has an energy class of C.
I'm pleased that I finally upgraded my old big back square television with this one, it may be a little too large for my lounge but it's still nicer than what I had before. I picked it up at a good price and wouldn't hesitate to go out and buy it again for the price I paid. The picture quality is good, the sound quality could be improved, but overall it's a nice TV.
Summary: I'm finally up with the times with my television!
