I have never been a big television person and before I bought my latest TV I used to have a little 21 inch portable sitting in the corner. Then I went to Curry's to buy a fridge freezer and walked out with this beast of a television.
The TV appealed to me straight away in store as it is well designed, with a sleek black glossy case and a smart and expensive looking appearance from the screen to its little stand. It has a 40 inch screen diagonal to diagonal which is huge compared to what I was used to, however there are bigger televisions available for similar prices but a different brand.
As soon as I plugged the television in I was stunned by the difference in picture quality from my little old CRT portable, I was expecting quite a big change but it was like I was seeing the world through the corner of my living room at last!
The picture quality is excellent, sharp and clear with well defined colours. The TV is HD ready, and in fact I now have Sky HD connected to it (yes, I am now very much a television person, I am converted!), and the quality of this is quite breathtaking, you can see every little detail in the programme you are watching, I felt like I had a tiger in my lounge last night...!
The television is easy to set up and programme, and has connected to all my gadgets without any incident at all (DVD recorder, video, Sky HD, Xbox 360, Wii and PC tower). I am not good at technology but even I was able to synch it with all these things easily. As you can see, there are quite a lot of sockets in the TV as it is easily capable of linking to many gadgets at the same time.
The remote control is easy to use and the functions are clear.
I am a complete convert to proper home entertainment and will never be going back to my poky little portable!
Samsung have been designing quality TVs for years now, and started selling LCD and plasma TVs around 6 or 7 years ago. The LE-40 is one of their latest TVs in a fantastic range that has been given great reviews over the year for its stellar quality and style.
The LE-40 has a fantastic HD picture quality in 1080p, and I was shocked by how good it was when I first turned on my TV, and that was before I had even connected it up to an HD channel. The colours are all vivid and the amount of pixels (there are five times as many on a 1080p TV) gave the picture a really sharp edge.
The TV itself looks very nice, the black colours are minimalist and yet bold, they are very stylish. On every TV in this range there is a large on off centre button and a strip at the bottom, it all looks very nice and I love the look that this TV gives, it is so important for a TV to look good as in many cases it is the centrepiece to a living room, so it cannot look shoddy.
On the back of the TV, which is very thin, you will find a variety of ports on the back of the TV. There are three HDMI ports available on the back of the TV, so users will be able to plug three different HD machines into their TV at once. These different ports make the TV very versatile, there are so many different options that can be made using these.
I would certainly recommend that any potential buyers purchase this TV, it works very well and does everything required of it. It gets an outstanding five stars for doing everything it should really well.
The Samsung Series 5 comes with full 1080P High Definition when compared to the Series 4. I decided to spend the extra cash to make the most of my equipment and go for the full HD model.
I ordered the TV from Empire Direct who has now been bought out by Richer Sounds. The TV was delivered in a rather large box containing a 40" TV, remote control, instructions and a cleaning cloth. It cost roughly £600 9 months ago with a Samsung upscalling dvd player included. I believe it's still around the same price...
Firstly, due to the piano black gloss design it attracts a lot of dust and finger prints. The anti static cleaning cloth really does the job leaving it almost free from dust after a swift wipe.
The TV sits on a swivel base; buttons are located down the left hand side and the front connection sockets on the left hand side. The TV has a good variety of inputs:
3 x HDMI
1 x Component
1 x Analogue output
1 x Optical Digital Output
1 x USB slot for Wiselink
2 x Scart
1 x Aerial
1 x VGA
2 x Audio input for pc - phono and jack
1 x S-Video
1 x front video and audio
1 x earphone socket
With the growing variety of input/outputs for other components, TV manufacturers are being pushed to provide even more options and more of each option...
Once turned on I went through the automatic set up which didn't take long, I then logged on to my pc and used some tried and tested picture settings from avforums.com. If you've taken your TV out the box and left the settings as standard, you really aren't getting the best out of your picture! The Samsung was a bit too bright, some colours would bleed into others and when using the computer my eyes would water due to the contrast being so high.
After adjusting the crazy amount of settings which little I understood, I played around, did a bit of channel surfing, tested the games consoles etc...
The picture really is superb especially compared to my friends budget Panasonic. If you're looking for a reliable TV which has the higher end features at the middle range price, Samsung is your best bet.
The only issue I have had is the first TV I received didn't produce any sound, but the replacement has been perfect.
Its been a bitter-sweet day - a fond farewell to the outgoing 28in Philips CRT, and a warm welcome courtesy of ARGOS to a very glossy and impressive SAMSUNG Series 5 40in 1080p! Now, I was worried the leap in scale to a 40in tv might be too much for my living-room but the moment this black-beauty was installed to the corner-cabinet where its predecessor once sat it looked immediately at home and not at all oppresive to its surroundings. The unpack and set-up are truly effortless, literally within a minute of powering-up the digital receiver had located all channels and we were off! The remote matches the tv's gloss too, easy to navigate and well thought-out. In terms of road-test it's still early days but already I feel completely satisfied with this purchase, the picture quality is vibrant deep and sharp, the sound despite what I'd read is really rather good too.. every aspect of this tv exceeds my expectations. A gadget packed future-proof tv for under £550 - this tv is one to add to any shortlist whether you're a gamer, movie-buff or tv addict the Samsung series 5 1080p offers the whole package! Now I can't wait to hook-up a Playstation 3 and Sky HD - I'll let you all know how that goes next month!
