Bought this after christmas. Totally not tekkie and I hate setting up new TVs or anything technical so was dreading how it would work with my Virgin V+ box and dvd recorder. As it was, it was really easy.
My only mistake was to presume that it would have the cable necessary for HD TV in the box - it didn't, so for the first week I had to use my old scart connection. As it only has one scart, I couldn't connect my dvd player in that time. I needed an MDMI to HDMI cable, and found the price of these varies tremendously. I got one on-line from 7day shop at a fraction of the price of high street stores.
The TV looks very sleek and has excellent sound quality, even on non HD channels. As soon as I turned it on it tuned itself in. For someone like me, that's a real bonus. It's very easy to go from digital freeview TV to my virgin V+ box and DVD player. Easy to understand handsets are another thing a non tekkie like me appreciates. I've also linked up my laptop, so altogether it's been a really useful buy that looks very good in my room!
We paid £700 for this TV from Littlewoods catalogue two years ago as we needed a TV for our first home. It arrived in the biggest box ever and was really well packaged. It came with various wires, remote control (with free batteries), cleaning cloth, instructions and even a user manual on a free USB drive!
It was fairly easy to unbox and once we did so we placed it on the LCD TV stand we purchased especially for the Samsung TV. I would recommend to anyone buying an LCD TV not to buy the black glass TV stand for LCD TV's, my friend has one of these and its the bain of her life! Its easy enough to dust the TV down every few days, but the stands house too much equipment making it hard work removing all the dust. Instead we bought a silver one, which looks great and doesn't show up dust.
I was taken back by how big the TV was, it took me a while to get used to it i tell you! The picture is crystal clear, infact it's so clear i really notice the difference when i go to relatives houses and see the difference compared to their plasma TV. The sound is outstanding, it can be set up in many modes like Cinema, Music etc- which is handy if you are watching a film. The TV has ports to plug in a USB hard drive to watch films or family videos saved to the drives and you can also plug in a HDMI cable and link it to your laptop or pc to do the same. The TV itself is quite robust too, i have a little one who seems to enjoy bashing it out of excitement- its took a few hard nocks but thankfully no damage was caused.
When my niece broke the TV Samsung even came out and fixed it for me, they took it away and brought it back within two weeks fixed like new. I think its important whereever possible to have a review of the guarantee also, as nobody wants to pay hundreds of pounds for something only for it to break and be faced with bad customer service. You wont find this with Samsung, they where really kind and helpful- unlike a few other brands i have previously come across.
The only problem i have with this TV is the dust it collects, the material of the frame is that black shiny static stuff that collects dust and needs dusting every couple of days to avoid a big layer of dust.
We bought the Samsung LE-40B551A recently when our old beast of a television died on us. Having been used to having a TV from the stone age which weighed a ton and took up half the living room we decided to go for a sleek LCD and decided on this one.
It cost us £540 in Dixons and we bought it online it arrived a week later and came in the hugest box ever!
So what do you get for the £540 I hear you cry! Well for those of you who are more technically minded which cannot be hard as I am rubbish here is some of the specification!
80,000:1 Dynamic Contrast
50hz Built-in digital TV tuner
4x HDMI, 1x SCART, 1x Component
SRS TruSound HD
It also has Samsungs Anynet+ remote which means you can control up to 12 Samsung devices all on one remote.
It was really quick to set up and taking out of the box putting it on the stand and searching for all of the free view channels took about 10 minutes.
It looks good and really glossy and the picture is really good. I thought it would give me a headache being so big but it hasn't and the picture on a dark scene is also really good. The remote is really sleek and easy to use. It plays a little tune on turning it on and off which I quite like but I guess some people would find annoying but you can turn this off.
I have viewed my pictures on it from my camera and it plays a nice slide show. The sound quality is good although I have been using our surround sound speakers for sound. We had a bit of a panic recently as when we went to turn the volume up on the TV it wasn't working but we had somehow managed to completely turn off the sound on the TV without realising and on reading the manual turned this option off so this is obviously our error as we are a couple of dimwits and not the TV's!
The only thing that drives me crazy is that it attracts dust like a magnet but it does come with a cleaning cloth.
