Advantages: Looks great with a great spec
Disadvantages: no glasses
The toss up was mainly between this Samsung and the Philips 40PFL7605H. The Samsung comes in around 20 pounds cheaper than the Philips. After playing with both models in the shops we bought the Samsung. The main reason being that the screen was bigger. We have been phenomenally impressed by our choice and we would both recommend it. We picked ours up £699 with a pair of specs thrown in and a voucher for money off a 3D Blu ray player. As there are two of us we did have to buy another pair of glasses. These were about £65 pounds but come with rechargeable batteries. So far we have had no problems with our glasses.
I was extremely surprised when I found out that this television has 3D capabilities for this price. My boyfriend was determined to have a humongous television. This television has an impressive 46" screen which looks rather imposing in our front room but we absolutely love it and are the envy of all our friends! I would have thought that to get a 3D TV you would have to settle for a smaller set especially in this sort of budget. The 3D abilities for us are a great bonus and not something we had our hearts set on. The quality of the picture is outstanding. Watching a 3D blu ray DVD is a whole new viewing experience and my boyfriend is enjoying watching the football in 3D. It is something you need to try and we are so glad we chose a television with this feature. The resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, again of the highest quality.
The television is sleek and sexy and looks undoubtedly like one of the Samsung family. It's shiny and glossy and yes a bit of a dust and finger print magnet. Due to this glossy finish (we have ours by the window) it is susceptible to picking up reflections. This is a bit frustrating sometimes.
It has a contemporary see through outer trim which defines this model as being of the next generation of Samsung televisions. The stand is futurist; set on four points and looks funky and well designed. A downside to the model however is that as technology seems to be getting lighter and more compact this television is heavy and thicker than its counterparts. It is 8.3 cm thick and weighs 17.6 kg! Compared with the Phillips one we were looking at this is around 2 cm thicker and a whole 1.2 kg more! This is because the Samsung use CCFL lighting rather than the new LCD technology that most other models, the Philips one included, are using. Using this technology is something that 3D viewers would appreciate as it prevents the blurring problems that LCD 3D sets tend to encounter. Due to its thickness though and unlike the ultra thin LCD televisions, the TV can hold large good quality speakers. This integrated woofer sounds fantastic and includes theatre sound.
This Samsung set features a progressive 200Hz engine coupled with a scanning backlight. The Philips only has 100Hz, proving that again the Samsung is coming out on top.
The remote control is a traditional standard design, it doesn't look very impressive but it does have back lit buttons.
The television has four HDMIs that are built to the v1.4 3D-capable spec. There is also an Ethernet port and two USBs. We have used the USB ports to view a friend's wedding photography library and they looked fantastic, turning our front room into a viewing gallery. I have also managed to connect the computer to the television via the HDMI perfectly and this was simple and easy to do.
It is very energy efficient with the consumption falling to an absolute minimum of 0.1 W after a few minutes on standby, making this an A rated machine.
We are fully satisfied with this buy, it's a shame it doesn't come with more glasses. I'd hate to have to kit a family out in glasses! I'd fully recommend this product.
Summary: An affordable television that offers a variety of features.
