The new Sony KDL37EX5050 is an absolutely fabulous television. it has HD freeview plus built in and on the 37" HD screen it is amazing to watch your favourite shows on the freely available HD channels. The sound quality is perfect, the screen quality is perfect and the features are perfect.
There isn't anything bad that I can say about this device, and it's not at a bad price either. In the mid hundreds in most stores and I have found a lot of shops offering ''buy now pay later'' deals on this television, which is good as you can pay in smaller packages.
I first tested this TV just to see what it was like, and immediately decided to use it as my main set. It fills a huge portion of the room and stands out, visitors always comment on it. Additionally I have chosen to scrap my digital TV subscription and I am just using the Freeview HD capabilities of this tele.
If you are looking for a large screen HD tv with extra features then I would advise getting this one, it looks great when being used as a standalone TV, great when being used using a blu ray player and great when being used with gaming devices. There really is nothing that this HD device fails on.
I purchased a new Sony KDL-37W5500 about six months ago and am really happy with the TV. Although a relatively high value purchase item, I wanted to buy a more premium brand as the TV is something that is used on a regular basis so the price can be justified. The picture quality is awesome even when using the standard in-built freeview. The TV uses the latest Sony technology and the sound quality is really crisp. The TV really comes alive when using it with a HD box and I now want to extend the system to include Sony sourround sound.
The main drawback I find with the TV is the electronic TV guide as this often freezes or operates very slowly. The channels are listed displaying the channel logo so unless you visit some channels regularly you cannot see the channel number until the channel has been selected. If you are operating a sky or Vigin box for example with the TV you will not have this issue as you will be able to use that TV programme guide instead. This is only a minor irritation and has not prevented me from purchasing a smaller Sony flat screen LCD TV for the bedroom.
It also pays to shop around to find the best price for the Sony TV. I was amazed at how much the price can vary between retailers! I purchased from www.richersounds.com in the end as they will price match on any like for like offer.
Buy this TV, you will not regret it. I bought the Sony KDL-37W5500 virtually on the day it came out, so I have had it for almost a year now. I have been very impressed with it. Installation and set up was a breeze and things were up and running very quickly. I use this television mostly on sd rather than hd. The sd quality is excellent, far superior to my old cathode ray tv. That said I have blu-ray and an hdmi out on my laptop. The images are so crisp and sharp that they are amazing, so much so that I have just ordered my sky hd box to make full use of this feature.
Sound quality is great, I have read elsewhere that the sound is below par, well I am more than happy with it, that said the virtual surround sound feature does not seem much different to the normal stereo set up.
The set up can take ages to refine, there are so many adjustments to the picture that you find yourself fiddling around for ages. I have different picture set-ups for all my inputs (hdmi, sky, dvd recorder) so there is plenty of variety on offer, and even the most finicky of people will find a setting that they like.
Sony build quality is legendry (I have some electrical items still working fine after more than 10 years). The TV came with a 3 year Sony warranty; it won't be needed but is great for peace of mind.
The biggest recommendation that I can give is that I have just ordered this television for my dad, he was so impressed with mine, and he is in his 70's and not into technology at all. They are now £300 cheaper then when I bought mine. So a must buy at this price.
I will be a bit bias as i own this TV...its AMAZING. The sony Bravia series of televisions are without a doubt one of the best. My family own a Samsung which is a decent tv but the sony is more advanced.
The picture quality is amazing. I own a PS3 (another sony product) and the 2 work beautifully together. High Def gaming as well as blu ray are amazing. I get full 1080 when watching blue ray movies.
There are some televisions that are cheaper than the Song, but you can tell the quality difference. The song is worth the extra money. The tv has more than enough ports to connect dvd player, ps3 etc. There is also a socket which allows you to connect your laptop or computer, allowing the tv to be used as a screen. Not only is the picture quality amazing on the Sony, but the tv itself looks awsome. All black with the gloss finish. The 37inch is an ideal size. Its big enough to see from anywhere in the room but it does not loose picture quality (a problem you may have with 50inch+ t.vs)
The Sony Bravia TV series is up there when it comes to TVs. The quality that they produce is one of the best that you can buy.
The Sony KDL-37W5500 is a decent model from the Bravia range although this particular model is a 37 inch monitor which is quite rare. Most people tend to choose between either a 32 inch or go to the better 40 inch.
The Sony KDL-37W5500 is a full HD Ready TV yet you do require a High Def source to experience the full HD 1080p, and 100hz. Without the High Def source then the TV is pretty ordinary and you are better off buying a lesser brand TV and a smaller price. The 100hz makes the picture move faster and results in it having a smoother picture, so if you like sports and high def then this is definately a TV that you will appreciate.
The issue with Sony is that when you a buying a Sony product, you are more of buying the brand. you will get a high quality product with rare reliability issues but it comes with an extra cost. You definately pay more than other brands for the quality but a lot of thier customers say it is definately worth it.
With this Sony TV, you tend to get high quality in the areas that are most wanted such as the high def. Not many similar products can beat this TV is the high def area but it does draw on similar levels when you are using standard definintion sources to watch. The sound quality is nice and crisp, but a surround sound system easily beats it.
This is a good TV that is very enjoyable, easy to set up and very user friendly. It does not heat up as much as my old flatscreen TV and the picture quality is a huge improvement. I world hugely recommend this TV to many if they are willing to pay a little more because it is a Sony product but if money isnt a issue then this is one to go for.
The Sony W series has a quite good reputation as a dependable and good quality picture TV. However, as the 37" is a relatively uncommon size in Sony TV's in most shops in the UK it will be over priced. The 40 inch version will be better value. Also, regarding the speck a trait that can often be found in Sony TV's is that they will have a similar series with quite similar speck but at a lower price. Usually it is the V series that will be cheaper version of the Sony W. Regarding the W5500 speck, it has all that most people will want: it is full HD 1080p, and 100hz. Nonetheless, the 1080p will only matter if you put a HD signal into the TV, (so a Blu-Ray, Shy HD, Virgin HD or freeSat), other than that it will not nessecarily be a better TV. The 100hz will mean that the Tv is better for fast action films and sports as it refreshes faster and has the smoother picture. A general trait with Sony Tv's is that they are dearer than the competition and this model is no different. This does not nessecarily mean it is a bettet Tv. Having said that Sony are always reliable and their Tvs have a smaller breakdown ratio to other brands. regarding the picture if you put a Hd picture into a Sony Tv they are hard to beat but on a normal terrestrial quality picture they are not always as good and a general trait is that they have a pale picture and facial features can appear quite gray. This Tv is a good TV and you will get a good picture but in most cases you will get just as good a picture if not a better one from other brands, but the trade off is that they are not as dependable in the long run.
Quite simply innovation at its best: this TV is a keeper. The W5500 delivers the next generation in picture excellence with unrivaled depth, richness and clarity. What's more, you can connect to your favorite digital devices for total entertainment.
