Last summer our old Samsung TV in our bedroom finally died. At over 15 years old it had done well! I knew that I wanted my new TV to be a much slimmer model than my previous one and that it had to be HD ready. I also wanted something that looked stylish with good picture quality. However I didn't want to spend too much. I did some research and decided that I liked the look of the Toshiba 19 AV615DB. What you get for your money. ************************* As I had over £100 worth of Amazon vouchers I decided to buy the TV from Amazon. However I have just price checked and see that this TV is cheaper from both Tesco and Argos at £159.99.I paid slightly more. I am no technical expert so will try to explain each feature of this TV as I understand it! The TV has a lovely shiny black surround and looks very classy! It is a flat screen model so is slim line and can be wall mounted. By the end of 2012 all analogue TV transmitters will be switched off. Unless you have a TV with a digital tick you will need a set top box to enable you to receive a signal. This TV has a digital tick meaning it is ready to receive digital TV. It has built in freeview so can receive around 70 freeview channels if this is available in your area. Unfortunately we will not get freeview in our area until 2012, so I can't comment on this feature! This is an HD LCD (high definition) TV that uses Toshiba's Active vision. This is a high performance picture processing technology that enhances colour, contrast and picture detail. High definition TV's give a clearer picture as the picture is made up of many more lines than those of a standard TV. This is an LCD TV so tends to be less bright than a plasma screen TV. As this is for a bedroom that is quite bright this was an ideal choice. Although I have read that plasma screens have better colour quality, they also use more power. There is an HDMI or high definition multimedia interface, connection. This is so that you can connect your games console or DVD player and get high definition picture quality. There is also a SCART connection and PC input socket. There is also a headphone socket so I can watch and listen whilst my partner sleeps. There is both teletext and fasttext available. Fasttext enables you to switch quickly between different pages without any delay. The TV has an 8 day electronic programme guide so you will always know what's on in advance. The TV comes with a remote, sleep timer and parental lock. There is a full instruction booklet provided. My experience. ************** I have now had this TV for nearly a year so feel able to give an accurate review! The TV was really easy to set up and once plugged and connected to the aerial, it scanned for channels automatically. This is just as well as the instruction booklet that came with it is not that great! The writing and illustrations are really small and difficult to decipher. I love the sleek shiny black surround and as this is a flat screen TV it doesn't take up much room so will fit into a small space. Although it is very light, making it easy to move around, it is sturdy and not easily knocked over! It can be wall mounted although I have chosen not to do this. I had been used to watching TV on a very ancient Samsung so the picture quality of the Toshiba blew me away! I couldn't believe how sharp and clear the images were and the colour reproduction is excellent. This is especially noticeable when I watch wildlife programmes. The sound quality is a bit less impressive, although for a small room it is adequate. I did notice when I moved the TV to a larger room that the sound tends to boom when the volume is turned up. However as this TV usually lives in my bedroom it is fine! I have watched using earphones and the sound was fine. My son has used this TV to play his play station through. The picture quality was very good. The picture quality is also excellent when I play my DVD player. The pros. ******* As you can probably tell I rate this TV highly! It is very easy to set up and use. The picture quality is superb and it looks great too. It doesn't take up much room, is light and easy to move around although sturdy enough not to be knocked over. The cons. ******* There really are not many negatives, but if I had to find any I would say that the shiny black surround shows marks easily so will need constant cleaning to keep it looking its best. Although the sound quality is adequate for a bedroom it may not be good enough for a larger room. Overall I think this TV is an excellent buy for the price and would not hesitate to recommend it!
