Gelert Horizon 6 Tent
by ruby_xo A couple of years ago my family bought a tourer caravan but before that we used to go camping all the time in a tent, which I still use when I go camping with friends. We've had this for some years now and it has lasted us so far and it has been a durable and reliable holiday home. It has got plenty of room inside, is not too difficult ... to pitch up, and is fairly waterproof. My family has had its fair share of tents in the past and this is the best one we have ever had. I thought I would review it today having just got back from a camping trip a few days ago. We used this tent when we went this time and as always it didn't let us down. Gelert is a North Wales brand, as far as I'm aware, and I'm pretty sure it is named after the legend of Bedgelert, which is about a dog who is unlawfully slaughtered by his master, after he has done nothing wrong, and in fact when he was protecting a baby. But anyway I'm not here to discuss old legends so I'll get back to telling you about the tent. The point I wanted to make about the brand being Gelert was just the fact that it is a really good quality brand. I've bought other products from there such as waterproof clothing. I have a waterproof jacket from here which is excellent. The tent is expensive if you are paying its full price which is just under £450. But luckily for us when we bought this it was much cheaper. I don't know if that was because it was many years ago when we paid for it, and this new price is down to inflation. Or whether there was a sale on when we got it. But anyway I don't know much about tent pricing but I do think £450 is very steep. Possibly it has been worth it for us if we'd have paid this much, but if you hardly ever go camping I can't see how paying this much could be justified. So a disadvantage of this tent has to be the expensiv Putting up the tent was really easily done. It didn't take long to do at all. We had a tent once where you had to put together all these long, heavy poles and you had to get one person to hold them up at one side, to allow someone else to hold up another pole on the other side, and then someone else would have to go round and clip them all together. That was a nightmare to put up and it used to take us ages even when a lot of us helped out. But with this tent it didn't take long at all to do. It is so simple that one person can put it together on their own. My dad has done this. But of course it is much quicker for two or three people to help put it up. The longest it takes to put up is half an hour. Another great thing about this tent is the fact it is also pretty easy to carry round once it is taken down. The poles fold up and everything fits into a bag that can be carried around with you. It is heavy but if you are really strong you can carry it round on your back. Personally I'm not strong enough to put it on my back like a rucksack, I have to drag it along the floor, but my friend can carry it on her back. It easily fits in a car boot and although it does take up room there is still space for other stuff. When we first got this it was very waterproof but over the years it has got less and less waterproof, we got some waterproof spray though which solved that problem. However I wouldn't risk putting this up in heavy rain unless you want to risk waking up in a pond. We have only ever had it up in light rain which it has survived, but I wouldn't want to risk damaging it in heavy rain. This is a perfect family/ friends camping tent in my opinion. It is also easily cleaned, with a cloth to get rid of any stains (someone spilt alcohol in one of the bedrooms). We did also try hoovering up but the floor kept getting sucked up by the hoover so I would recommend a dust pan and brush instead! Overall I would definitely recommend this tent. Gelert Quick Pitch SS
by totallyextreme Intro ------ Everyone knows the perils of getting to your camping destination with the rain absolutely hailing it down and having to erect your tent with no prior knowledge; the instructions get damp and you have a thoroughly miserable time. Well, those times are over, with this Gelert pop up effort, you really do not need to ... worry about time wasted popping up the tent, but still need to worry about taking it down, which is a bit of a pain. I bought this for camping at mates at summer partys' and festivals, and it has fulfilled its task perfectly, but i still haven't worked out how to take it down in a hurry! The product --------------- After taking it out of the bag and putting it up (something will take a maximum of 5 minutes) you will realise the beauty and simplicity of this tent. It is made from polyester and the outer skin is waterproofed. The groundsheet is made from polyethylene, as is standard with tents of this type. It is nice and big inside, measuring at 140 cm x 275 cm, but the height is very restricting for most at only 130cm. Normally i type about how nice it is to have luxury in a tent or camping trip, and that is lacking here, and is definitely only appropriate for one night and probably more suitable for youngsters. The price ----------- I think this can now be found on the internet for about £30, i originally bought mine for a bit more than that i think, but it has served me well and is good quality, thus it is probably worth that much but it is definitely worth having a look around on the net. Durability ----------- I have used this tent on one off nights on a few occasions, perhaps about 8 in total, and it is still in very good condition. When i have packed it away i always get it out again the next day and give it a quick wipe and a onceover, but its something which is easy and doesn't take too long. Summary ----------- A good tent for youngsters and one that is suitable for just a night or two, any more and you would be getting a bit bored of life i think! Read the complete review |

Vango Icarus 500
by xBorgx Choosing a tent can prove to be quite an arduous task, and I guess it was around this time last year that I decided that my old three man Vango was not sufficient to our needs anymore. The kids were getting bigger, we needed more space. It was getting old and a few holes were appearing. I wanted more space anyway, and I was getting ... annoyed with having to crouch down all the time as it was only about five foot high. When looking for a tent, I suppose the first thing you have to decide is what you want from a tent. I usually like to take the kids camping around three times a year and go off on my own with my mates another couple of times a year, with my other tent. As my kids are starting to get older I decided this year to buy a bigger tent for us. Borgette, my daughter, is now eleven so needs her own room and 'space,' so I wanted a tent with two rooms to cater for her privacy. Borgeth, my son, could sleep in my room. We would also use Borgette's room to store clothes as well. I also wanted a tent which was easy to put up on my own, if need be and felt that a tunnel tent was the best option. I had a look around various camping shops, website and looked at other tents on campsites and fell for the Vango Icarus 500. This tent fills all our camping needs when I am on a camping trip with my kids. It has a sawn in ground sheet as well, which is great for keeping out the elements. It has 3000 HH which means it can withstand a lot of rain before it starts to seep through. We went to Hawkshead in the Lake District recently and stayed for four nights in the new tent. Borgette gave me a hand to pitch the tent and it was all pretty easy, though the poles were tricky to put through at first, but I think this was just the newness. There are three poles which you feed through the holes and a separate bedroom attachment. The bedroom has a partition wall, but you can remove it to make the room into a big room for five people. The living room is nice and big and you can stand up in it. There are the usual shelves in the bedrooms, but there are five shelve (about 8 inches square) sawn into the tent by the bedroom compartment as well. I found this very handy for storing stuff like shampoo, deodorant and toothbrushes, etc. The tent has a window to the left of the tent as you look at it and a side door to the right as you look at it. There is also a big main door at the front. What is quite handy about these doors is the fact that they have attachable mesh to keep out midges if need be. Although this is not a huge tent, I will say that it is great for one adult and two kids, two adults and one kid. If you have a bigger family, you might feel a bit squashed, especially on a rainy day when you all in the living room. A quick glance at the Features: * Flysheet: Protex® 3000 polyester embossed - this looks likes it will last well! * Inner: Breathable 190T polyester - I did not notice any condensation in the mornings. * Groundsheets: Polyethylene 10,000 * Windows: PVC * Poles: PowerFlex® fibreglass + TBS® II - they seems sturdy and flexible * Pitching: Flysheet-first * 3000 HH - great for wet weather! * Vango Air-Zone - Large Venting Panels * Fully enclosed groundsheet with step over doors * Vango easy-pitch tunnel - I agree, was quite easy * Vango 'lights out' inner tent - I did appear darker inside, but the hot morning sun still crept in. * Vango pelmet * Easy find orange inner clips * Part mesh inner door * Roll back inner divider * Mesh doors * Mesh ventilation * Windows have internal curtains Overall: Well worth the price. It retails at around £220, but there are some good deals around if you look. I bought mine from Milletts for around £150. It was worth every penny as I am sure I will use it many more times. The pack size is 70 x 32 x 28 cm and it packed into the boot of my Focus well enough along with sleeping bags, chairs, foot etc... It is not too heavy at 13.70 kg. Both kids gave it a 10/10... and I guess I have to agree! Read the complete review |
