Advantages: Crystalbrite Background, DVI, 8ms response
Disadvantages: Bulky Power supply
I had this monitor sent to me by Acer after my previous monitor, the AL1914 was deemed beyond repair. My first thoughts were of excitement as the 1951 was of a considderably higher spec than the old monitor.
My excitement became a reality when I got the monitor set up. On opening the box, I found the monitor itself, the power supply, and both a VGA and DVI cable. The stand was already pre-fixed to the monitor and this also doubles up as a wall mounting bracket, should you wish to attach the monitor to the wall. On the back of the base there are sockets for the mains power supply, one for the VGA cable, one for the DVI cable and one for an audio feed, should you wish to make use of the monitors internal speaker. Personally I prefer to use my own speakers so I am unable to comment on this feature.
The first thing you will notice when switching the monitor on for the first time is something that Acer call Crystalbrite. This means that the background really is the darkest black you could imagine and is comparable to that which Sony use on its Vaio range, this is the first big improvement I noticed over the AL1914. The picture is also extremely sharp and crystal clear, and all of this is via the VGA input rather than the supposedly higher quality DVI.
If you need to change any of the monitor settings, there is an on-screen menu which is accessible from the front of the monitors base which again is a vast improvement from my old AL1914.
On the monitor I recieved there were no dead pixels visible and everything appears to be running smoothly.
As I said earlier, I received this monitor as a replacement under the Acer warranty (the AL1914 developed an unfixable fault where a blue line would run all the way down the screen in one particular location). If I had bought this monitor it would have cost approx £190 and comes with a 3 year return to base warranty.
This monitor is a standard 4:3 ratio monitor (ie not widescreen) but is more than adequate for my needs. I would recommend this highly to anyone who is thinking about upgrading to a 19 inch monitor in the near future
