Advantages: Crisp image, USB ports

Disadvantages: none

--Background--

I use this 19 inch monitor in my role of Project Manager. It is the first TFT I have been bought by the company as previously, all staff used the bulkier CRT models. First impressions are that the amount of desk space you save is vast and the image quality is very impressive. You have the choice of either using the VGA interface or the newer DVI interface, whichever you choose you are guaranteed a crisp image.

--Installation--

This monitor is extremely simple to set up even a computer novice would have no problems with it. All that needs doing is connecting the appropriate VGA / DVI cable from the back of the PC to the monitor and then connecting the power cable to the mains. The next time the PC is switched on, Windows (assuming you are using that operating system) will detetect the new monitor and attempt to adjust itself to the correct resolution. The monitor itself has an auto tune option, should you need to configure this yourself. The monitor drivers and utilities all come on a CD. Unless you are having problems with getting the correct monitor resolution then you shouldnt need to load any of these onto your PC.

--Useage--

I've used this monitor now for about 12 months and have had absoloutely no problems at all. Functions are driven from an on-screen menu where you can control brightness, positioning, image settings, colour settings and language.

What I like about the monitor is the fact that you can plug two USB devices directly into the monitor. These save me fiddling around on the floor trying to locate a spare slot. The monitor comes with a cable which goes into a USB slot on the PC which allows connectivity.

As I use this monitor for work purposes only, I am unable to comment on the suitability of the monitor for games playing. I would expect it to be more than adequate though as, at the time, this was one of Dell's higher spec 19 inch monitors.

The monitor can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically. Personally, I find the horizontal adjustment a pain as once you have moved it slightly, it is a nightmare to get it sqare again as it aways seems to be tilted slightly in one direction or the other. The monitor stand consists of three legs and a support which has been designed to allow you to pass all your cables through the base. This is a nice little feature as it helps to keep the desk tidy instead of having cables scattered everywhere.

The manufacturers specification for this machine is as follows :-

Monitor Type Flat Panel LCD (Passive Matrix)
Contrast Ratio 700:1
Brightness 300 cd/mē
Response Time 8 ms
Dot Pitch 0.294 mm
Color Depth 24-bit (16.7M Colors)
Viewable Picture Size 19 in.

--Verdict--

This is a very high quality monitor which would suit the professional user. I personally prefer my own monitor, the Acer 1951S as the screen is a lot more glossy and vivid. That said, I would certainly recommend this monitor to anyone.
