Besides my regular job, I do web development, some graphic design, and I am an avid consumer of series and movies. Now, doing that on a laptop is neither comfortable, nor fun. I always loved to have screen real-estate, however the more you want of it, the deeper you have to dig into your pocket, or so I thought until I found the LG IPS234V for a mere £109 on Amazon.
I used to work with LG optical drives, and they tended to disappoint, so I was for a good reason very sceptical about getting this monitor, however the price, the size of it, and the technology it employed convinced me. And trust me, I am not easy to convince...
The monitor comes in a slightly bigger box than the screen - of 23" - itself, however if you get it from Amazon, you might get it in a ridiculously big box, as if it were a 40" flat-screen TV. A very plain, but quality box with a nice white plastic handle for carrying around, so keeping it is a good idea if you think of moving at one point or another in time. What you actually get in the box varies from country to country. In the UK, you'll probably get what I got: the screen, the 2 piece stand, UK power lead, a VGA cable and a CD which I never really needed. All nicely packaged with protective foil virtually everywhere.
The screen itself is surprisingly thin, around 2 cm, except where the connections go (VGA, HDMI, DVI-D, audio, and power), which is a mere 5.5cm. Like stated before, this is a 23" screen, which is the actual screen real-estate, without the bezel. The dimensions with and without stand are the following: with stand - 54.4 cm x 18.1 cm x 40.6 cm x 3.1 kg; without stand - 54.4 cm x 5.5 cm x 33.2 cm. According to technical specs, it is of a matte black colour, but that's not true. While it is black, it is not matte at all. It is a glossy black. What's actually matte, is the screen, the IPS panel itself. The glossy finish goes on to the stand as well, which while easy to set up and does include cable management, is its weakness. It's not very sturdy, it's quite wobbly to be honest, and it's a pity because everything else about this monitor is just fantastic.
It's obviously a fullHD monitor of an 1920 x 1080 resolution, and while IPS, it still manages to have an only 5ms response time. This means, it's great for gamers as well. The viewing angle, thanks to the IPS technology, is of 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally which means you can watch a movie comfortably in any position, and still have the same image quality. Speaking about image quality, the screen performs surprisingly well for a £109 monitor. Partly due to the IPS panel and the LED back-lighting, the colours are crisp, well defined and the black is almost pitch-black. The accuracy of the colour-palette I would say is of 97-98%. It's very much acceptable for Photoshop users, if they're not yet in a situation in which they can go for a high-end monitor. Don't get me wrong, this is not a low-end screen. It is very much a mid-range, and deserves all the attention it can get.
The menu is quite simple to use, and works by using the buttons on the bottom right side of the frame. Speaking about menus, the one detail that has to be manually set in order to get life-like colours and contrast is the contrast that has to bet set to 70% and brightness to 25%. That also means your regular power consumption will go even lower than the 27W/h they mention in the tech specs. This monitor will certainly not blow your power bill up at all.
- employs new IPS technology in combination with LED back-lighting which results in sharp, crisp, life-like colours and fantastic viewing-angles (regardless of the connection you use)
- very light, easy to carry around
- menu is quite easy to use
- good response-time
- low power-consumption
- good for gamers as well (no more reasons for gamers to hate IPS)
- wobbly/flimsy stand
- cable-management given the position of the leads is quite pointless
- does not have speakers
All in all, I would say it's the best monitor out there at the moment, especially if you can get it for under £120. It's a 2013 model and performs better than expected for its price-range. Unless you're a hard-core graphic designer, this monitor will be the best option for anything you might use it for.
LG are well known for their excellent range of monitors. They look stylish and sleek, they're simple to use and when turned on they look fantastic.
This monitor supports the 1920 x 1080 resolution, which is standard for full HD 1080p viewing. That means that for playing games or watching HD movies, you don't get better than this. The sheer detail and sharpness of the images are fantastic. It has support for all necessary screen refresh rates, has an incredibly great response time and sharpness, as well as supporting matte black.
It has support for wall-mounting or use with other monitor mounts.
In terms of connections, it supports HDMI, VGA and DVI input - which means that no matter WHAT device you want to connect it to, it will be supported - something that very few monitors take the time to do.
All this for £100, you're really getting a fantastic deal here. I couldn't be happier with a pair of these connected to my gaming pc.
The LG range of monitors are superb in their style, simplicity and functionality and this model is no exception.
At 23 inch it is perhaps a bit large for some users but is ideal for photo editing and viewing Dvds.
It certainly ticks all the boxes for screen refresh rates, response times etc. and for a sub £100 device - where available - is certainly one worth considering.
This can be wall mounted rather than desk topped if required.
The black glossy finish would suit most rooms and I have found the LG range to be scratch resistant although the casing does tend to be a bit of a dust magnet.
With VGA HDMI connections plus a headphone socket all needs are catered for.
Good for gaming, (with the correct video card)
First delivery was plagued with overheating but this was resolved by a replacement with a 24 hour turnaround.
Very impressive service all round.
