Advantages: Cheap, Installation Ease
Disadvantages: Reliability, Weight
At the moment the office I work in is replacing all of its standard Monitors with Flat Screen TFT type screens. Being a price concious organisation, it has opted for a cheap version of the monitors that normally fetch the best part of 300 quid! So at 150 pounds, this is basically 2 for the price of 1. However, so far I have noticed at least 2 faults which I shall mention. Firstly, lets look at the asthetics of it. It looks very nice although it is finished in Beige Plastic. Rather old looking compared to the more accepted "Black" or "Silver" hardware in the office. Very retro. The screen is very clear and sharp with a nice resolution. It will basically perform and handle the same as a 17 Inch standard monitor. It is a very chunky for a supposed flat Screen monitor too. Maybe the cheapness has affected its depth and size. It goes to show you get what you pay for. However, it comes with some nice extras. It has 2 speakers in built to it. These are hidden behind Dotted Grilles at the bottom and probably contribute quite a bit to the weight of the item. It also has a nice easy navigation system on the menu. This comprises of just 4 small buttons and the on/off switch. It also comes with its own transformer, mains lead, sound card to monitor lead and monitor to video card lead. Installation could not be easier. Plug it into the video port on your PC and insert the included 3.5 inch floppy disk when prompted. It will then install the relevant drivers and files. To aid your usage and installation, there is a handy 14 page booklet full of helpful information and a specifications guide. For the techies amongst you craving figures, here is some info: Screen size: 15 Inch Maximum Resolution: 1024 x 768 Refresh rates handled: 30-80Khz Dimensions: 380mm X 58mm X 336mm Weight: 5KG Now, the problems. I find it an extremely heavy Monitor to car
ry for its size. At 5KG, it is one of the Heavier TFT's around. Secondly, The wires supplied are all lopng enough except for the soundcard/monitor connection. The others will allow a substantial range but this is only about 1 metre long. It restricts where you mount your PC in relation to the monitor. Lastly is its longevity. Already we have had 4 failiures out of 35 units in the first 6 months. This is not good. The Crystals are leaking in the top Right corner on 2 units and we have dead pixels on 2 more. This does not prove good but they are covered for 1 year on their garauntee. A cheap monitor for what it is but beware the ones that go wrong!
